About us
ZHyRON project aims to pioneer a valorisation pathway for steel-making by-products rich in iron and zinc, with the goal of enhancing the sustainability and circularity of the steel industry. Although valorisation processes already exist in this field, they rely on high CO2 emissions, compelling the metallurgical industry to transition to hydrogen as part of its journey towards carbon neutrality. The project will thus explore solutions related to technical integration, economic viability, and environmental considerations. This will foster innovative business models and strategies for the extraction of still usable iron and zinc from metallurgical waste using hydrogen as reductant. Funded by the European Union. The Steelmaking industry is challenged by rising zinc-containing by-products and the need to reduce carbon emissions. The Horizon Europe-funded ZHYRON project is developing an innovative solution combining pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical stages and using green hydrogen. At its plant HYDROMETAL Belgium (Engis), the JGI-HYDROMETAL group is leading one set of piloting activities. The plant is testing various methods to produce high-quality zinc, aiming to identify the most efficient approach. A smart monitoring system will be developed to optimize overall efficiency and detect potential issues. The techniques will then be integrated into a technology train for final validation with zinc-bearing material.
