🌍 Today, we're excited to join the conversation during an online coffee chat hosted by the Partnership for Quality Medical Donations (PQMD) on "Protecting the Next Generation from Protracted Crises: A Look at Humanitarian Responses through a Child/Youth Lens."    World Vision Sr. Technical Advisor for Protection Sarah Harris is joining colleagues from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, UNICEF, and others to discuss how we can strengthen child protection in crisis settings.    PQMD is a unique global alliance of nonprofit and corporate organizations dedicated to improving access to healthcare in underserved communities. As a long-time partner, we are proud to collaborate with PQMD in our shared mission to protect vulnerable populations.     For World Vision, partnerships are a key part of our broader efforts in child protection, particularly in humanitarian contexts.    For example, through collaborations with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) in programs like Beyond Borders in Colombia and Agência Ven, Tú Puedes in Brazil, we are addressing the root causes of violence and displacement affecting children. In Colombia, we’ve supported over 15,000 children at risk, providing essential services such as shelter improvement and case management. MCAN Launches Radio Awareness Campaign with UNICEF SBC Support. MCAN, with the support of the UNICEF SBC program, has launched a month-long, two-shift daily radio awareness campaign aimed at promoting inclusion in humanitarian services for minority and marginalized groups across Somalia. This initiative seeks to amplify the voices of excluded communities and ensure equitable access to critical services, fostering a more inclusive humanitarian response. Through this campaign, MCAN is working to create awareness and drive meaningful change in addressing the needs of these vulnerable groups.

Today, UNICEF Eastern and Southern #Africa launches its 2025 regional humanitarian appeal for children, prioritizing the needs & rights of vulnerable communities living through overlapping crises including climate shocks and public health emergencies. The commitment and trust of our donors and partners have made our work in the region possible. However, several of our humanitarian programmes are critically under-funded, which jeopardizes our long-term efforts.  As we look towards 2025, we must continue to prioritize action and investment for children in the region, ensuring that every child has access to their full rights. https://lnkd.in/dt-R3BTX

🌟 This year represents the end of a £100m MacArthur Foundation grant-funded project by Sesame Workshop and the International Rescue Committee to support Syrian refugee children. Their work is inspiring, and it's got me thinking a lot about the potential of AI to support displaced children 💡 👶The Problem: The Syrian refugee crisis represents a severe humanitarian challenge, particularly affecting children. Many of these young individuals are deprived of the chance to learn and play, with significant exposure to violence. This has resulted in widespread "toxic stress," severely impacting their brain development and future prospects. 🌟 Solution: Sesame Workshop, in collaboration with the International Rescue Committee, has developed a comprehensive program to support the developmental needs of these children through various channels: 📺 Mass Media: A locally-produced television show tailored for children in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, aiming to reach 9.4 million viewers. The program utilizes engaging characters to facilitate learning and emotional comfort. 🏠 Home: A caregiving initiative delivered through home visits and mobile messages, providing personalised support to families. 🤝 Center: Early learning programs in community centers and government preschools, supplying educators with digital and print resources to enhance teaching effectiveness. 🌱 This holistic approach not only aims to mitigate the immediate adversities caused by the crisis, but also empowers these young individuals to build a more hopeful future, transforming the landscape of refugee education. #EducationForAll #RefugeeCrisis #HumanitarianAid #ChildDevelopment #SesameWorkshop 🤖 🖊 Written with the assistance of AI.

This week marks the two-year anniversary of the war in Ukraine, and we're calling attention to the pressing needs of and the power of collective action to bring hope to the 14 million people—including 3.3 million children—deeply affected by conflict.    The Ukraine war has thrust children and families into a maelstrom of uncertainty and hardship. We’ve been on the ground since the beginning, employing our global expertise and strong partnerships to deliver life-saving aid and foster long-term recovery.     We've joined forces with international partners like the World Food Programme, UNICEF, and USAID BHA to extend our reach, offering essential services across the area. Applying a holistic approach, we can provide immediate relief and pave the way for sustainable development through psychosocial services, educational programs, livelihood support, and other evidence-based, transformational approaches and programs.    As a result, we've supported and equipped over 1.6 million people in Ukraine alone, including 772,000 children. We’re also on the ground in Romania, Moldova, and Georgia, ensuring families hosting refugees receive the support necessary through strategic partnerships like that with the WFP. As of December 2023, we’ve provided:    ◼ Emergency food assistance for 541,552 people.  ◼ Temporary shelter assistance for 97,653 people.  ◼ Hygiene kits to 318,307 people.  ◼ Mental health and psychosocial activities benefiting 107,796 individuals.  ◼ Child protection programs supporting 89,096 children.  ◼ Educational programs benefiting 253,469 children.    We are steadfast in our mission amidst the Ukraine crisis, committed to implementing innovative, sustainable, and impactful programs to heal and rebuild, championing peace and stability for millions facing the continuation of harsh conditions. This week, UNICEF Executive Director, Catherine Russell, addressed the Security Council to call for an end to grave violations against children in Ukraine and a focus on solutions that invest in children’s lives. This week as well, on December 5th, UNICEF launched its 2025 Humanitarian Action for Children (HAC), appealing for $9.9 billion to reach 109 million children living through humanitarian crises. During my trip to Ukraine two weeks ago, I was able to directly observe the impacts of one of these crises on children’s well-being, education outcomes, and mental health. Many of the children that I met demonstrated signs of uncertainty, for both their futures and survival. Unfortunately, this uncertainty is not just experienced by children in Ukraine, it has become a phenomenon observed globally. This year as a whole, far too many children around the world have suffered the brunt of conflict. And not enough humanitarian funding is being received to meet their needs. This is especially alarming in critically underfunded emergencies such as Sudan, DRC, Haiti, and Bangladesh, where children are at heightened risk of malnourishment, illness, and exposure to violence. What Catherine Russell stated at the Security Council applies not only to Ukraine but to all conflicts worldwide: "Humanitarian efforts, while vital, cannot be a substitute for a political solution to end… war and suffering.” UNICEF remains committed to stay and deliver until the end, but the best solution is made through peace.
