A sneak preview of the topic for my December #skills newsletter which aligns beautifully with something Emi Chiba presented at the Gartner conference in Sydney last week. What my 2024 skills research has shown is that our industry has been too focused on 'Transformation' pressuring companies and leaders to be fully #skillsbased resulting in many not starting because its too hard (or scary or big), whilst others have tried and seemingly failed (or paused or retreated) because of the enormity and cost of the change challenge. There is however, another path which Josh Bersin refers to as 'Pragmatic' and Gartner refers to as 'Optimisation'. In simple terms this just means we are going to use smart technology and greatly improved skills data for our talent management practices, and yes we can still have jobs and more traditional organisational structures. The result, better workforce planning, greater internal mobility, improved learning and reskilling and somewhat easier talent sourcing based on skills. This can be achieved without major shifts in ways or working and operating models and without the major change effort and risks associated with skills-based transformations. It may be time to do away with the jargon and branding of #skillsbased or #skillspowered and reconceive our approach to using skills for talent management practices. Whether its pragmatic, optimised or perhaps #skillsinformed we can make meaningful progress with skills without boiling the ocean or transforming the entire organisation. I love this, a pragmatic approach which allows companies to learn and evolve on the way... much more achievable for many!

Strategic workforce planning is critical, a skills based approach helps address biases.

1wEmis presentations were fantastic. It was interesting to see where certain areas, including skills are sitting on the Gartner hype cycle. It seems there is a large amount of work that needs to be done both in skills strategy readiness and the vendors presenting a silver bullet now before this can be solved.
