My eye recently caught an interesting piece of data. #Nigeria's population has increased by about *100 million* people within the last 20 years. All of the unrest you're hearing from Nigeria today is happening because the country has historically sustained itself by pumping two million barrels of oil per day. But now, it's not just that the country doesn't pump that much oil anymore. What's worse is that the fraction it currently produces cannot cater to 100 million more people. For 50 years, Nigeria's leaders never had to learn how to organize a productive economy or create prosperity. A la base, the governance process was as straightforward as collecting petrodollars and distributing these dollars to the states and 'districts' every month. Point barre. Nigeria's only economic crises were how to *temporarily* cope with changes in global oil prices. The leaders figured out that no matter how bad things were when oil prices crashed, the country would be okay again when oil prices rebounded. One military ruler, who imported so much cement that the country's main port collapsed, even said Nigeria's problem wasn't money but how to spend it. Fast forward to 2024. You now have a country executing four budgets in the same year because there was no money to execute the last two or three budgets and they're still being disbursed. You now have 100 million more mouths to feed inside an economy that has shrunk *by half* in dollar terms in the last 10 years alone. You now have a government shipping rice around the country as if there's a famine. Nigeria's leaders must now be forced to do what they've never learned how to do: solve an actual economic crisis without oil. Can they do it? https://lnkd.in/d2VzjAMF

This morning, we’re releasing the fifth annual Milken Institute Institute and The Harris Poll Listening Project at the Global Conference in LA. Our survey of CEOs, business leaders, and the American public examines the challenges, strategies, and priorities for unlocking growth and resilience in America by focusing on public/private partnerships, place-based innovation, AI and cybersecurity, trade and supply chains, and climate change. Some fast facts: 1. While (81%) of business leaders believe the U.S. economy is strong, just (40%) of Americans agree – a 41 %-pt. gap. 2. So cultivating resilience across society is seen as crucial for managing disruptions and shaping the future: (89%)of business leaders concur that “It is important that America is able to create resilient policies and solutions to navigate disruptions.” Likewise, (86%) of Americans say, “I want a more resilient America that leads the world in its capacity to navigate and handle crises.” 3. Business leaders stress that place-based innovation can rebuild institutional trust (91%), create new manufacturing systems (90%), and rebuild political trust (88%. Likewise, Americans agree that “Business leaders should work more closely with government leaders to solve our social challenges” (76%). 4.
