I recently hosted two webinars to present our updated WSH strategy to our partners. This revised strategy is designed to drive down the costs of reinvented toilets by adopting a targeted product development approach. By prioritizing markets with both the capacity and willingness to invest in advanced, initially higher-cost technologies, we are setting the stage to stimulate demand, increase manufacturing scale, and ultimately reduce costs across all markets. This approach paves the way for widespread adoption of high-quality, affordable, and water-efficient sanitation solutions, accelerating progress toward a more sustainable future for all. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy talks about the need for a "whole-of-society approach" to advancing social connection. We've tried to heed that call in our work at Einhorn Collaborative, supporting a broader range of efforts that engage actors across sectors. That includes: Projects like Team Up to enlist large national civic organizations with a presence in local communities to help people build connection across difference through service. Research groups like Building H to measure the impact of products on consumers’ health and urge companies to do better to improve social connection and other health outcomes. Initiatives like Human Connections AI to bring together social connection experts with technologists to puzzle through how AI companions can be designed to enhance and not degrade human relationships. Another project that has helped us explore a facet of the whole-of-society approach is the Connective Tissue Framework, which puts forward a range of recommendations for how government – especially at the local level – can create the structural conditions and everyday opportunities for people to experience healthy connection. From initial concept to finalizing this first phase, the NET ZERO ENERGY CARE Project has been extremely rewarding. This project showcases a path to revolutionizing care homes by transforming them into net-zero-energy facilities. This pioneering initiative, funded by charitable foundations Bodossaki Foundation, John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, and The Hellenic Initiative Canada and spearheaded by the TIMA Charitable Foundation and INZEB, which provided the technical support, exemplifies the intersection of environmental sustainability and improved living conditions for the elderly. --- Project Highlights Include --- ---> Energy Efficiency: Phase One: Upgrading insulation, windows, and HVAC systems to significantly reduce energy consumption (estimated 70% savings). Future Phases: Installing photovoltaic panels to achieve complete energy autonomy. --->Environmental Impact: Major reduction in CO2 emissions. Alignment with EU energy and climate objectives. --->Economic Benefits: Significant cost savings in energy expenses. Reinvestment of savings into enhanced care services. --->Health and Social Benefits: Improved living conditions for residents. Ongoing health impact study to measure benefits. Why this project matters: This project addresses the high energy demands of care homes and sets a precedent for sustainable practices in the care sector. Addressing climate change has shifted from a purely moral imperative to a business imperative for associations. It's affecting every profession or industry we serve, and associations are uniquely positioned to address climate change by leveraging our influence. The #ClimateCrisis has never been higher in our awareness, yet charitable donations to environmental organizations have dropped over the last few years. Daniel Stein, the founder of Giving Green, and I sat down with Alison Stine, at the Nonprofit Quarterly to discuss the challenges and opportunities in climate philanthropy, meaningful giving strategies, and the importance of donor trust to address the underfunding of climate policy advocacy and tech innovation. Kudos to Ben Gose & The Chronicle of Philanthropy for shining a light on the opportunity for philanthropy to improve its track record in rural America. It's good to see a serious amount of ink coupled with nuance and care on this subject. As mentioned in the article, my research has found more than $465B of opportunity for rural America in #IIJA, #CHIPs, & #IRA, but rural communities - esp the poorest - will struggle to access it. What a chance for foundations! And for those foundations focused on racial equity...rural is where the dual burden of place & race manifests most strongly. If you have a racial equity agenda, you should also have a rural agenda. So glad to see well-deserved credit given to Katrina Badger, MPH, MSW & RWJF, which is truly this era's rural philanthropic leader among national foundations, as well as other philanthropic entrepreneurs such as Ann Lichter & Resource Rural; Heidi Binko & Just Transition Fund; and Charlie Brown & Trust for Civic Life. And the article mentions place-based foundations such as BLACK BELT COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, LOR Foundation & Ford Family Foundation that are at the cutting edge of this work. The article also references the incredible work of practitioners such as Jim King of Fahe, Kimber Lanning of Local First Arizona, CEI (Coastal Enterprises, Inc.) (tune into the next #ReimagineRural episode for more on them ;-), Partners for Rural Transformation, and too many others to mention. It's a great introduction that demonstrates just what good investments are available for foundations that take an interest - the opportunity for impact is huge. The data has been consistent for decades, and forthcoming research will again reinforce it: rural America receives a disproportionately low share of philanthropic resources, which is especially distressing given rural places dominate the map of the nation's most deeply disadvantaged places. A must-read post by my colleague Kevin Bolduc! "But as a sector we really need to avoid the continual temptation to assume that we’ve found a transformative new philanthropic approach, or even that there is a single one out there to find. That’s particularly true when that assumption becomes a distraction to the very hard work of understanding the performance of organizations using various approaches — new and old — and improving their implementation! I’ve been around philanthropy long enough to have seen the “next great approach” emerge again and again. Think back to venture philanthropy, social impact investing, collective impact, giving while living, and, more recently, trust-based philanthropy. Each, at moments, has been touted as the “new” approach that could be used by every funder to increase their impact. Even though I think each did bring something fundamentally important to philanthropy, more nuance is required: these are tools that work better and worse depending on the goals and the context of change you’re after."

While New York Climate Week feels like an age ago, I haven't had the chance to post about one of my key highlights - Seeing an increasing number of forums created to discuss and elevate the role of women leadership in climate action. It is something I am extremely passionate about. It was very exciting to see a platform that began as an idea in a deck a few years ago to now become a reality. The Women Climate Collective, a platform created by Fondation L'Oréal with support from Purpose Climate Lab, aims to amplify the voices of leaders driving the transition to a just and inclusive future where everyone can thrive. It is so heartwarming and inspiring to see women leaders engage with peers, leaders, decision-makers, and innovators to discuss strategies for advancing climate action in international forums like New York Climate Work.  I encourage you to read about the impactful work our leaders are doing and discover how WCC brings together diverse women to achieve common goals here: https://lnkd.in/d9AEykPm The NYT covered 35 leaders from India this time. It's been an absolute privilege to be an Ambassador for TBP and to collaborate with Shaady and colleagues in our shared pursuit of transformation - to the funding experience and to funding systems. Excited about further collaboration as this second chapter unfolds. Because there is still a long way to go. As Shaady and Pia note here: "even with transformation afoot, there are still competing forces inhibiting our ability to realize the future that so many of us are working toward". Hey fam, real talk: do people still do book clubs? 📚 Or better question: how do you feel about civic discourse about radical tech and climate futures with strangers (or actually, future friends)? 👀 Over the summer, trubel&co started an internal book club. As we develop curricula, engage nonprofits, and share our vision for #liberatoryinnovation, we wanted to not only be on top of the latest and greatest ideas, but we were hungry for a protected space to work out our own visions for justice amidst this digitally-enabled and environmentally-wrangled world. (Shoutout to Ruha Benjamin's Imagination and Kate Crawford's Atlas of AI for sparking some amazing discussions). My current obsession is Ayana Elizabeth Johnson's What If We Get It Right (thanks Arpan for grabbing me a copy at #ClimateWeekNYC). I'm only a third through it, but I'm quite literally telling everyone about it (hello world!). As I'm reading it, I'm back to my typical search to find others also interested in radical imagination about reshaping society for the better who want to question, dream, and build. But I'm curious, are others interested in chatting virtually with strangers about these topics?
