Job Description
COPY EDITOR AND PROOFREADER, Alumni Association (MITAA) (part-time, 62.5%), to ensure the excellence and accuracy of the MITAA’s communications and marketing pieces. Will edit written content to ensure that material is clear and consistent, complete, credible, well written, grammatically correct, accessible, and aligned with the MITAA’s editorial style guide; proofread, fact-check, and conduct follow-up research; and collaborate with colleagues to ensure a focused communications and marketing strategy that advances the MITAA and MIT toward their goal of engaging alumni and friends.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED : bachelor's degree in a related field, preferably journalism; two years’ journalistic, professional writing, proofreading, or editorial experience; excellent organizational, problem-solving, time-management, negotiation, decision-making, planning, customer service, interpersonal, project management, verbal communication, proofreading, writing, and editorial skills; full command of the English language and appropriate prose style; scrupulous attention detail; flexible approach to the work environment; proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); and discretion with sensitive materials/issues. Must be able to perform copyediting work for grammar, spelling, accuracy, format, and tone; work independently and collaboratively as a team member; multitask and meet tight deadlines without compromising quality in a fast-paced, high-volume work environment; form strong interpersonal relationships and influence others to reach agreement; and work under pressure. PREFERRED: professional experience copyediting and fact-checking in a publishing, news, or agency environment; familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style; experience editing and fact-checking promotional copy for print and digital media; analytic and research skills to gather and evaluate essential data from a variety of written and individual sources; understanding of higher education, advancement, and experience working in a marketing or publishing setting; and experience with project management software. This is a part-time, twelve-month term appointment. This position will be hybrid, with a combination of on-campus and remote work. Schedule to be determined.
Must be able and willing to work occasional evening and weekend hours as requested, including at all-call MITAA events.
Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check.
