Empathy versus sympathy
- One of the internal skills that is finally garnering some attention in the business world and in the space of leadership is empathy. It's important as we begin to talk about empathy about what it is because oftentimes there's some confusion around it. There's a difference between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy is basically a thought. I am so sorry that that happened to you. Empathy on the other hand, is experiential. When you have the capacity to be empathetic, you actually have an experience of what the other person is experiencing in your body so you'll have a flash and a moment and feel that tightening in the chest, the tightening in the stomach, the stress that's there in the hands. This is actually empathy and it is a very powerful tool that we can use as leaders to connect and also to influence. (soft music)
