In order to reach net zero targets by 2050, investments of around $4tn annually are needed, green infrastructure specialist Tara Shirvani told LinkedIn. “We're barely scratching the surface,” she added. With around $460tn in assets, the global financial sector has the potential to play a key role in funding the green transition. It can do this by either divesting from polluting sectors and companies or reallocating money to sustainable projects. However, financial institutions have so far lacked regulatory incentives to end fossil fuel holdings. Meanwhile, the failure to clearly define and standardise green investment labels has created the situation that one in seven funds branded "sustainable" are linked to higher emissions than an average investment fund.
