'Software sprawl' fueled by WFH

Remote work has a downside: more technological overload. The additional software needed for meeting, training, onboarding — even surveilling — off-site employees has them “toggling between different apps and websites 1,200 times each day,” according to a study by work graph platform Soroco. That adds up to four hours a week, or roughly five weeks a year, spent “context switching,” a stressful activity that makes it harder to focus over time. While some managers are culling apps in use at their firms, others are looking for yet another software tool to make sense of it all.

  • The number of apps deployed on average by companies last year was 89, up from 52 in 2015 — 187 if the company is big.
