The Melbourne Cup Carnival is not just a horse racing event; it is an iconic Australian brand that draws repeat tourism from around the world. With deep roots in Melbourne's and Australia's history, this event has become a significant international drawcard for Victoria's tourism economy. While drawing repeat visitation is challenging for most sporting events, the Melbourne Cup Carnival thrives and attracts millions of visitors annually to Victoria. Creating a sense of place is difficult, but fortunately, there are opportunities to reinforce the destination and broaden its appeal. One example is Melbourne Central, one of my past major urban projects involved Australia's most successful urban renewal project. Since its opening, Melbourne Central has catalyzed over $9 billion of new projects, with many more billions of dollars of new projects underway or in advanced planning. The outcome is that Melbourne Central has changed the direction of the City of Melbourne. Melbourne Central has become an iconic destination and is set to draw around 40 million annual visitors this year despite Melbourne's low office occupancy rates—the lowest in all Australian Capital Cities. As the Melbourne Cup Carnival continues to grow in scale and significance, there's no doubt that it will continue to reinforce Melbourne's position is that of a premier tourism destination. #Melbourne #MelbourneCentral #MelbourneCup

if you're considering a ski trip this winter - great resource here to check if the resorts you're looking at publically report on their emissions, and if they have a plan to reduce them... fingers crossed for a good season. (of course from an emissions perspective flying to a resort is likely to have the biggest impact - but if you're going to go, no harm encouraging the resorts to play their part too)
