🔔EVENT ALERT🔔 The UK National Innovation Centre for Ageing is proud to be partnering with Cognitive Frailty Interdisciplinary Network (CFIN) on this event (14th Oct 2024) We will be bringing a wide range of stakeholders together to facilitate new partnerships, exchange perspectives on cognitive frailty and stimulate new research ideas and solutions. 𝗖𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘁𝘆 describes the intersection of mild cognitive decline and physical frailty in older people that affects ability to perform everyday activities and is a risk state for falls, later dementia and need for care support. ❗It is an important condition because it is 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲, 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 and 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, unlike dementia❗ As ever by sharing #AgeingIntelligence we aim to promote research and innovation to address health inequalities, improve health resilience, and increase health and quality of life in older age. This event is open to all including researchers, businesses and those with a personal interest or wanting to know more about the condition. We’re excited to share that a study led by Maria Angela Franceschini, PhD in collaboration with Connors Center Executive Director Hadine Joffe, MD MSc and Connors Member Shadab Rahman, PhD has been selected by the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) as an awardee of the #SprintForWomensHealth! 🎉 They will receive $3.29 million in funding through the initiative’s spark track for early-stage research. The study, titled Near-Infrared Glymphatic Health Tracker (NIGHT), aims to address a critical need in women's health by enabling effortless monitoring of the glymphatic system (GS) function at home with a wireless NIRS-EEG device during naturalistic sleep. Women face a substantially higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), yet existing methods for assessing GS function are limited and impractical. By offering a non-invasive, cost-effective solution tailored for home use, the GS-FlexNIRS-EEG device could provide valuable insights into GS dysfunction in women, potentially leading to early detection and personalized interventions to mitigate their heightened risk of neurodegenerative disorders like AD. The ARPA-H #SprintForWomensHealth is addressing critical unmet challenges in women’s health, championing transformative innovations, and tackling health conditions that uniquely or disproportionately affect women. As inclusion of patient and publicinvolvement in health research gathers momentum as a requirement for funding, patient organisations warn us against tokenistic attitudes to lay involvement in shaping our research processes. How do we achieve this? Our new editorial in Health Expectations here: https://lnkd.in/eqFuNpjW

To mark World Alzheimer's Day on September 21, a collective of professionals from the healthcare, community, academic, life sciences and public health sectors, as well as caregivers and the general public, joined forces to raise awareness among Quebecers of the prevalence of major neurocognitive disorders (MND) in our society. In an open letter, they put forward a number of proposals for reducing the growth of Alzheimer's disease, encouraging progress in the care of those diagnosed and their families, and in the prevention of the disease. Although the prevalence of neurocognitive disorders is on the rise, it's important to remember that several studies have shown that 45% of cases of CMND are associated with modifiable risk factors. Learn more about the prevalence and cost of MND in our society, as well as the solutions proposed by the Collectif in this open letter. #AlzheimerAwareness #NeurocognitiveDisorders #HealthCareProfessionals #PublicHealth #CommunitySupport #CognitiveHealth #AlzheimerResearch #MentalHealthMatters #PreventAlzheimer #Health

Exciting news from the UK Parliament! The recent discussion around treating aging as a disease marks a significant step forward. Recognising aging as a treatable condition could unlock more funding for research and development and enable the creation and licensing of drugs specifically targeting aging. This is vital as currently drugs can only be licensed for the treatment of aging associated diseases rather than aging itself. This shift in perspective not only promises advancements in healthcare but also presents substantial economic benefits. By investing in longevity science, we can improve quality of life, reduce healthcare costs, and boost economic productivity. #LongevityScience #AgingResearch #HealthcareInnovation https://lnkd.in/eS-nSNHZ

Did you know that almost half of dementia cases worldwide could be prevented or delayed? 🧠💭 This recent article covers a seismic report published by the Lancet, based on 14 modifiable risk factors which are tied closely to lifestyle medicine based principles and approaches, could prevent or delay 45% of dementia cases! 🧬 Fiona Carragher, the chief policy and research officer at Alzheimer’s Society, which part-funded the study, said: 💬 “Some dementia risk factors, such as alcohol consumption and physical exercise, can be managed by changing your lifestyle but many must be addressed on a societal level. Social isolation, education inequalities and air pollution are beyond individuals’ control and require public health interventions and joint action between government and industry.” Have a look at this article here, or in our bio! 🔗➡️ https://lnkd.in/eQSxZguH 🌐www.bslm.org.uk #DementiaPrevention #LifestyleMedicine #AlzheimersSociety #PublicHealth #DementiaResearch #BrainHealth #HealthyAging #PreventDementia #GlobalHealth
