What Nobody Tells You About Engineering Careers: The 𝗧-𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 📊 Ever wonder why some engineers thrive during layoffs while others struggle? Here's a reality check: 73% of engineers who survived recent tech layoffs had diverse skill portfolios beyond their core expertise. The game-changing strategy? Becoming T-shaped. Think of it like this: → 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗿 = 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 → 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗿 = 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝘀 Engineers who excel at BOTH: ↳ Writing clean code AND effective documentation ↳ Technical skills AND project management ↳ Problem-solving AND client communication ...consistently outperform their I-shaped peers (those with only vertical expertise). A junior developer easily landed a promotion by: ✓ Mastering his core stack (Python/Django) ✓ Learning basic UX principles ✓ Understanding business metrics ✓ Contributing to technical documentation The market is sending us a clear message: Technical excellence alone isn't enough anymore. Ready to transform your career defense strategy? 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: 1. 𝗠𝗮𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 2. 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 2-3 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 3. 𝗗𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 5 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 4. This senior software engineer broke free from a mediocre life. Ten years at the same company, dreaming of a bigger paycheck—but it wasn’t just about the money. The toxic culture was draining him. He knew he deserved more but didn’t know how to break out of the cycle. It started with taking action on his own terms. He reached out to me. We started with a resume makeover, and suddenly, FAANG recruiters were reaching out. Then came the grind: LeetCode marathons System design deep dives Crafting stories that truly captured his impact He put in the work through mock interviews, pushing past the doubts that had held him back. Seven weeks later? 💥 A 133% salary increase at NetApp. He didn’t settle. He didn’t wait. He took charge of his own narrative and turned his career around. The lesson? You don’t have to stay stuck, tolerate toxic environments, or keep settling for less. You just need the right guidance and the guts to go for it. Don't wait another 10 years. Your dream job is out there. Break free from mediocrity.

Why commit to a career in software development? With AI all over the news and tech layoffs, it seems the bottom is falling out for software engineers. The reality is different. Here are some reasons why you should pursue a career in engineering (or continue on your path in this career) - 1. We have tons of software that we rely on as a society that will need to be maintained and developed. Think about all the apps you use for your personal life and for work. There's even more behind the scenes that keeps cities running, companies existing, banking systems from collapsing - we need good engineers! 2. You will learn and develop skills that you can use for your own projects. You can build things on your own when an idea comes to you, without having to pay for contractors and keeping things in your control. 3. The income potential is high. Companies need good engineers and will always need them. Many industries outside of tech pay their software engineers handsomely. 4. It's something you will enjoy doing if you like building things. It feels great at the end of a project to have something to showcase the skills you have developed! The biggest mistake I made as a new Software Engineer. I asked too many "stupid" questions. People often say "There's no such thing as a stupid question". But that's not true in Software Engineering. In my early days, I would go to senior engineers the moment I could not solve something. And I would ask "How do I do X?". In hindsight, that was a "stupid" question. The question should have been more like this: "I'm working on X. This is how I think it can be done. I've tried Y and Z but I'm facing this problem." This has 3 advantages: 1. Trying to solve problems yourself will help you grow as an engineer. 2. You'll learn more from the discussion because you've given some thought to the problem. 3. Seniors will help you more when they see that you respect their time. Of course, you need to keep deadlines in mind. But whenever possible, give your best shot before asking someone else. You can timebox it if needed. Like they say, give someone a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach them how to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.

The Software Engineering Zero-Sum Game I love my career, I love everything that encompasses Software Engineering and Development. It makes you be engaged, it challenges you to keep pushing beyond and even further than that. Funnily enough I think that Software Engineering is similar to the Action-RPG games I love and have played since early childhood; you need to devise a strategy with which you will decide to tackle the task you want to undertake. You need to plan on what you wish to focus as your "build" or rather as your expertise area. Every single build has something it lacks just like it has it's strength. I love the way you can feel yourself changing just as you keep fighting a plethora of problems that are bound to appear by the places you decide to work at just as the projects you personally decide to embark in your personal time. An undeniable nature of the Software Engineering job market of today is the dire Zero-Sum Game between many parties. If a party wins it must mean that another losses. There are no concessions in this regard. Who might the parties that I talked about might refer to? In my vision they ought to be The Companies and The Candidates. Candidates must always compete to excel and outshine their competition, they strive to accomplish their victory of getting hired by many methods, some of which are automating application, some of which are reaching out to people of interest at target places, some are tailoring themselves and their documents to a smooth grain level. But the fact remains that if one candidate wins, all others will lose. If one company accomplishes to hire while staying several times below of what the budget dedicated to it then they consider themselves as victorious. Only those who keep sharpening themselves, keep on pushing themselves, remain hungry, ambitious, vicious, courageous and persevering will continue to rise further up while all else sink. All of us want to be part of the top, how many will have what it takes? How many of those will also commit to pursue it? Reality often times is reduced to a simple but cruel game. I love my career, I am not oblivious to the subtleties that are adjacent to it, it dawns on you that just like many many other areas, fields and aspects of life you need to strive for growth else you go stale. #SoftwareEngineering #SoftwareDevelopment

Uh oh. It's too late for you to transition into software engineering. This is a lie that we convince ourselves of. While it might seem like the odds are against you, your biggest obstacle is yourself. You're keeping yourself from getting started. You actually might find that you have a huge advantage over other software engineers. Something that makes you stand out against the other applicants. All of those other skills you've built up. Unfortunately, it's very common for software engineers to hyper-focus on technical skills and neglect the rest. This could be one of your biggest strengths as a software developer.
