In this tech market of more than 300k+ combined layoffs, everyone will suggest to you that you should: 1. Constantly upskill yourself 2. Learn new skills that are trending in the market While that is true, you also need to understand you can only be hired if there is a need for more engineers in a company. The market is going through a rapid adjustment because of a mix of factors: Majorly, post-COVID, the tech market was booming, and engineers were getting lavish packages because the whole world was living digitally. But as soon as people returned to normal, demand dropped, and so did the requirement for engineers, and layoffs started. Now, AI is also booming, so companies are cutting costs and investing in that direction. Here's how to do it as a software engineer" As software engineers, we often focus on honing our technical skills, but there's another crucial aspect to career growth that's often overlooked: becoming a high-value "go-to" person or expert in your organization. In a recent article by Jordan Cutler, he explains why this is essential for reaching senior levels and provides practical advice on how to achieve it. https://lnkd.in/geZczEuf. Becoming an expert doesn't mean having the final say on all decisions in a particular area. Instead, it's about being someone whose advice is sought after and who is seen as a leader within that domain. This could be in a technical area requiring depth, or in a product domain like the onboarding flow or payment portal. Cutler emphasizes that this expertise is often a key factor in promotion criteria at top tech companies. To find your area of expertise, Cutler suggests considering three factors: 1. what you're good at 2. what you're passionate about, and 3. what has a high impact on your team or company.
