Your voice matters, and your words can inspire change. Yesterday, 10,000 Black Interns shared this message, and it resonates with me. I've always believed in the power of sharing our ideas and experiences to drive meaningful change. But what does that look like in practice? Here’s what I’m learning: 📍Engagement goes beyond words: It's about listening, learning, and applying what we discover. True change often starts with empathy, and I aim to bring that into every space I’m in. 📍Growth through community: The most impactful moments in my journey have come from collaborating with others. Whether we’re interns, new grads, or seasoned professionals, we all have something valuable to share and we’re stronger together. 📍Purpose-driven action: For me, a career is not just about a role but about contributing meaningfully. I’m committed to pursuing opportunities that align with my values and goals, like those that 10,000 Black Interns supports. Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue learning, contributing, and building a future that inspires others. #Inspiration #BlackInterns #CareerJourney #CommunityImpact #GrowthMindset

This week, I've been looking at photos of dozens of cohorts of new interns, placement students, being inducted into their workplaces. Laser focused on London and other diverse cities...The reality is that as early career professionals, we still have a lot of work to do. When I left my Russell Group university, where I was known as "the black boy" on my course, I knew my career would be defined by increasing access for those excluded from the best opportunities. Naively, I had hoped that a decade later, there would be a significant shift. I thought changes in policy, the impact of Black Lives Matter, the murder of George Floyd, the economic business case for diversity, or simply doing the right thing would create an appetite for hiring people who look like me, especially in London. Two weeks ago, I hosted a panel with two thousand black students who were ambitious, well-educated, and career-minded. So, if I hear that companies struggle to attract them, I’ll actually scream 😱. “We lose them at the test stage” – then change your tests. They’re not fit for purpose or the workforce. Also, hiring underrepresented groups onto a specific diversity stream is great, the work experience opportunity is valuable. BUT in 2024, the next step has to be ensuring that these interns convert into permanent hires within your business. We have to keep pushing ourselves, hiring the next generation of talent is too important a role not too. I battled with writing this post for fear of being ostracised by my early career peers for speaking up. Or unintentionally leaving people feeling offended. But honestly, I can’t be genuine about my mission to be the change I want to see if I don’t tell the truth. Anyway Saturday morning rant over, please don't unfollow - leaning into discussion is always better 😅 #moremotivatedthanever #earlycareers #internship #industiralplacements

Exciting first day at the Bright Network Internship Program! 🚀 Today, James Uffindell, CEO and founder, provided a captivating overview of the company's impressive evolution over the last decade. Thrilled to have Philip Yarrow as our host for this four-day journey, I am looking forward to the upcoming days filled with more learning and growth. Key takeaways from the keynote talks include insights from Ajay Kabra, partner at PwC on embracing challenges as opportunities for growth: - Be brave: Take risks and step out of your comfort zone - Be curious: Stay inquisitive about the climate, technology, and everything Joao Martins, Early Careers Advisor at Deloitte highlighted effective leadership through communication, time management, creative problem-solving, and team empowerment: - The power of communication: Clarity, active listening, and constructive feedback - Mastering Time Management: Prioritization, setting realistic goals, and staying flexible - Creative problem solving: Identifying challenges, generating solutions, and learning from mistakes - Empowering the team: Encouraging diverse perspectives, building trust, and fostering accountability and reliability Additionally, I gained valuable insights from the Black Heritage Industry Perspectives panel hosted by Johnson Zion Adeyanju. Understanding the importance of building supporting networks and developing diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies for black professionals is crucial. It is essential for individuals of African and Caribbean descent to excel and become tremendous professionals across all career fields. As black professionals face challenges in the corporate world, it's crucial not to downplay situations where we need to speak up and refuse to let microaggressions pressure us into hiding our true identities. Stay tuned for more key takeaways and insights from the enriching sessions! 💡 #BrightNetwork #InternshipExperience #LearningAndDevelopment

MoveEV is thrilled to announce our membership in the Black Fleet Network™! Together, we are dedicated to fostering a more inclusive and equitable future in the fleet industry. As we celebrate Juneteenth, it's important to recognize that while freedom was achieved, true equality is still a journey we must all commit to. The electric vehicle revolution is transforming our world, but to truly harness its potential, we must ensure that opportunities within the industry are accessible to all. Our collaboration with BFN is a step towards addressing disparities and empowering diverse communities in the EV sector. Here are two ways your company can help: 1️⃣ Internships. Did you know that 74% of all college student internships are occupied by White students, while only 6% are occupied by Black students? We invite our network to support the Black Fleet Network's mission by becoming an internship partner. Learn more about the BFN internship program: https://lnkd.in/dwNwqr4s 2️⃣ Membership. BFN offers different types of memberships, including a "Defenders Membership" for friends of the community who are not Black, African-American, nor Black African but who are looking to support this important organization. Together, we can drive the future of electric mobility and ensure access to opportunities for all. https://lnkd.in/g5x5MJZu Happy Juneteenth! Let's continue working together to overcome the legacy of inequality and build a brighter, more inclusive future. #blackfleetnetwork #juneteenth #evsareforeveryone #equality #EVRevolution #ElectricVehicles #Diversity #OpportunitiesForAll #MoveEV #CommunitySupport

I recently joined a Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal (MSPBJ) 𝘿𝙀𝙄 𝙐𝙥𝙙𝙖𝙩𝙚 panel where we dived into the complexities and pressing issues within diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work. I was honored to join Dirk DeYoung, our moderator, and fellow panelists Ka Vang, MS, Anne Doepner, Cecilia Stanton Adams, and DAVID EDGERTON JR (DEJ) as we shared perspectives on navigating these rapidly evolving dynamics. The Business Journal has summarized key highlights from our discussion in an article (link in comments) 📖. For many of us in this space we're holding and navigating a lot: - The evolving DEI landscape - Risk of litigation weighing heavily on strategic decision-making As I shared during the panel, leading in DEI today feels deeply personal, touching on aspects of identity and community that are central to who I am. At The BrandLab, these shifts have required us to be agile—especially in our summer internship program, which has always prioritized BIPOC college students in line with our mission. Now, we’re adapting by emphasizing a commitment to underrepresented communities within our application process. Check out the article below 👇🏽 for more insights from our conversation. These are important topics—let’s continue to share strategies and keep this work moving forward. #NonProfitLeadership #DEI #Leadership #Diversityandinclusion

The IT industry is embracing partnerships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to address the diversity gap in the tech workforce. Organizations like the North Carolina Department of Information Technology are spearheading this change with targeted internship programs for HBCU students. These programs are designed to offer real-world experience, aiming to integrate these students into the full-time professional sphere and enhance workforce diversity. With Black IT professionals significantly underrepresented in the sector, these intentional efforts by IT companies and HBCUs represent a strategic move towards a more inclusive and diverse tech industry. This collaborative effort not only benefits students by expanding their career horizons but also enriches companies with diverse perspectives and skills, driving innovation and inclusivity in the tech ecosystem.
