Whilst trying to teach my children the art of farming that grazing animals like cattle or pigs can produce vital nutrients on land we can't crop, eating foods humans can't digest. Too often, the many environmental benefits of livestock production (making use of non-arable land, improving soil health, and providing manure for crop systems) are overlooked or dismissed. This is even true by my 10 year old and though I try to discourage the use of phone technology she thought whilst learning the farming way she would rather make the video than star in it. So what I was trying to teach them was that Pigs and cows, in their natural environment, rooting and a tooting on grasslands, when properly managed, can act as significant carbon sinks. The process involves grasses growing rapidly and absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis. When cows or pigs graze on these grasses, they trim them down, which stimulates further growth and leads to more carbon absorption, same goes for their poo which fertilizes the soil. Additionally, the movement of the cattle encourages a diversity of plant species and soil aeration, enhancing the soil’s ability to store carbon. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension compiled its 2024 Southeastern Peach, Nectarine, and Plum Pest Management and Culture Guide. For peach growers in the southeast, the guide recommends TELONE™ applications "should generally be made in the fall prior to mid-November. October soil temperatures often provide the best opportunity for efficacy." It goes on to say, "pre-plant soil fumigation and the use of appropriate rootstocks are strongly encouraged on light, sandy soil where root-knot, root-lesion or ring nematodes are present. At ruumi we're working on assessing #Soil #Erosion risk to continuously monitor, report, and verify (#MRV) agricultural soil health at scale! 🌿 Erosion by wind and water causes physical loss of nutrient-rich top-soil and can transfer fertilizer and pollutants into nearby water bodies. Seasonal extremes due to climate change reinforce this: drier summers reinforce erosion by wind; wetter winters reinforce erosion by water. Today we are adding a first soil erosion risk model to our platform allowing us to assess erosion risk for agricultural soils at continental scale! This allows us for example to measure, report, and verify (#MRV) the extend to which a livestock supply-chain is affected by erosion and where to best incentivize counter measures.
