📸 This is what breaking out of my echo chamber looked like for me yesterday. 🤩 This time thanks to Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) who are a UK membership organisation supporting small and medium businesses. Not only did I meet people outside my immediate bubble (aka 3rd degree connections on Linkedin 🤣), I had such deep, energising and unexpected conversations 👇 💡 A commercial lighting company who help many sectors, especially hospitality, save money by saving energy with more energy efficient lighting and electrical equipment. The driver for their customers is both saving money and getting their Green Tourism Badge... but it does require a mindset shift away from focusing on CAPEX only to the total ROI when the OPEX costs are considered too. 🎄A commercial Christmas decorating business who faces real dilemmas on whether to offer real trees vs artificial, dealing with society’s insatiable demand for glitter, and waste management considerations for baubles, lighting and trees. My favourite story has to be how he teamed up with a local petting zoo to give them all the leftover Christmas tree from a local high street display. That’s how over 150 trees found themselves useful again for the community, saving both parties money and time and a reminder that one person’s waste is another person’s treasure. 🌟 Quite a few of us were first timers for the this in-person and informal networking at Green Park - some are FSB members, others are not (yet)…but they have over 200,000 members, are UK-wide, and offer 24-7 support. 😲 So great to meet you Oliver Nicholas, Matthew Kilford, Martin Knowles, Richard Ranson - Social Entrepreneur and Dave Hill and thanks Tim Page ACIM MIDM and James - see you next month. 🙏

Maybe this headline is a bit misleading. The City Revitalisation Summit built on the What If Nelson…? series last year and tried to identify and galvanise a way forward. The community hub was one of the talking points. But there were many other important ideas tabled. One that stood out was the lack of celebrating Nelson’s connection to the sea, despite its significant fisheries and world class marine research facilities. Nelson should build on being the lifestyle capital of New Zealand and start portraying itself more positively to the world. Following global trends, the city should focus on experiences rather than products. The arts and cultural facilities are a strong driver for revitalisation. There’s an issue with our aging population and the availability of affordable accommodation for young people in or near the city centre. Investors and developers need certainty about Nelson’s climate change adaptation strategy, civic investment and less red tape around planning and building. A very successful meeting that will be followed up in six months’ time. Nelson City Council’s new chief executive Nigel Philpott “wants to get sh*t done” and is open for business.
