Dust to Data: Monitoring Momentum in Drilling In the diverse drilling industry, managing dust is a significant challenge. ADIA members Eagle Drilling NQ and Specialised Infrastructure are proactively navigating the complexities of dust monitoring, shedding light on their strategies and reinforcing collective responsibility within the Australasian drilling community. Australasian Drilling invites all members to join this crucial conversation, contributing insights to enhance industry resilience and ensure a safer future for all. Eagle Drilling NQ: Pioneering Progress Based in North Queensland, Eagle Drilling NQ is committed to safety and innovation. As part of their operational ethos, they conduct quarterly respirable dust monitoring. General manager Sally Forgan highlights, "Collecting data from respirable dust monitoring enables us to continually monitor our improvements to our work area in regard to respirable dust exposure." By investing in supervisor training and collaborating with regulatory bodies, Eagle Drilling NQ has established a robust framework for dust data collection and analysis. Despite logistical challenges, the company remains steadfast in their commitment to safety. Their data-driven approach not only enhances workforce safety but also contributes valuable insights to industry-wide best practices. Specialised Infrastructure: Adapting to Legislative Imperatives Operating out of Canberra, Specialised Infrastructure provides electrical services and specialised drilling. Managing director Seb Hogan describes their response to the ACT's new silica dust regulations, which set a strict limit of 0.05 mg/m³. In collaboration with ADIA member-supplier Drilltechniques, they installed advanced dust extraction systems to ensure compliance. While the transition posed financial challenges, Specialised Infrastructure's dedication to worker safety and compliance remains unwavering. As similar regulations emerge nationwide, the company anticipates broader industry implications. Join the Conversation To share your experiences and contribute to this important dialogue, email Australasian Drilling magazine editor Jamie Wade at jamie@wadebusiness.com.au or call +0435 945 867 AWST. “[Operators] want to be able to predict how many wells they can drill in a month or a year with a given rig, but that has very little to do with instantaneous ROP, or how fast you drilled a given foot. It’s about how many feet we can drill for them in a year.” Hear more from H&P's Sonny Auld in this International Association of Drilling Contractors Drilling Contractor, Official Magazine of IADC deep dive into all things ROP. https://lnkd.in/g-W-d8Ts

This is the second case of a rig bound for The Black Sea requiring its drilling derrick (or mast) either laying down, or in the case of the bp-contracted drill ship I recall more than 20 years ago, having the top section removed to make it shorter. Neither option is normal and both require lots of up front design, removal and later replacement work.
