Aside from HR/OD/TD, Quality Management is among my core competencies. Since 1999, I have been involved in ISO 9001, and it has been my go-to framework for Quality Management. I have been a Deputy QMR/QMR/Lead Auditor in several organizations here and abroad for IS0 9001. However, I have growing preference for the EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) because of its strong emphasis and alignment on sustainability and organizational culture. Though ISO is trying to catch up on this, but I feel that EFQM is way ahead in integrating Sustainability to its standards. It’s a systematic approach to process improvement that helps you test changes and ensure sustainable quality growth. Plan: Identify what needs improvement and create a strategy. Do: Implement the plan on a small scale to test the change. Check: Review the results to see if the change made a difference. Act: If the change was successful, implement it on a larger scale or adjust as needed. Picture a bell-shaped curve where most data points gravitate towards the average, with fewer outliers at the extremes. Take, for example, a process with an average completion time of 60 minutes and a standard deviation of 15 minutes. This setup implies that nearly all (99.7%) of the process outcomes fall within three standard deviations—around ±45 minutes from the mean. In the framework of Six Sigma, a methodology renowned for its focus on quality, the concept of Critical to Quality (CTQ) characteristics shines. These are pivotal metrics that must be meticulously controlled within predefined limits to uphold stringent quality standards. By scrutinizing variations in processes, organizations pinpoint areas ripe for enhancement, fostering continual improvement and upholding elevated benchmarks of quality and efficiency in their offerings.
