I agree with u John. I too believe Daggett is itching to strike. Adam, not certain what u are referring to as additional consumer costs passed along by carriers. There is no direct connection btw labor (terminal) costs and consumer. Shipping rates will not go up due to labor costs as carriers have contracts with terminals over a period of time. It wud b like a super market saying they will increase food costs because minimum wage has gone up. Though carriers do own some terminals they are silos as separate companies. In many cases, it is the stevadores that pay the labor. And in fact, the largest terminal operators are non affiliated with carriers. Operators like Hutchison, PSA and DP World. My thoughts....

I'm calling a long ILA strike come January 16. If you doubt the likelihood of a strike by the ILA on January 16 and the duration, consider this insightful comparison to the current Boeing strike: Boeing has offered a 35% general wage increase over four years, yet did not include a pension plan, a key demand of the striking machinists (33,000 machinist). The pension plan was removed 10 years ago to retain jobs in Washington state. The strike started in mid-September and shows no signs of ending soon. It is crippling Boeing and their suppliers. This situation mirrors the ILA's stance on automation; despite previously accepting some level of automation in past agreements, the union now wants no automation. The ILA (45,000 members) will strike, and they will strike until they get what they want. Dagget is not going to budge on automation. Add the strike will occur FIVE days prior to the new Presidential inauguration. Will Biden implement the Taft-Hartley act? He did not prior to the election. As a lame duck, he could since he has nothing to lose and Harris would not be blamed. Will Harris implement the Taft-Hartley act? Prior to the election she said she would not if able to. Will Trump implement the Taft-Hartley act? He is more likely, but I do not think he will, teh strike will reinforce his stance on increasing manufacturing in the US. BREAKING: The contract was rejected by 96% of the rank and file. As of now, the union is on strike. The strike affects about 33,000 hourly employees, but there will be further effects the longer the strike lasts. It looks likely that the Machinists union will vote to reject the contract with Boeing tomorrow. If they do, the strike will begin at 12:01 am Friday morning. Several impressions I get from the linked article: 1.There is still a lot of resentment in the union against the poor leadership in the company. A common sentiment is, "Why should we have to continue to make sacrifices to help recover from the poor decisions that leadership made in the past?" 2. At least one union member expects the US government will bailout Boeing should a lengthy strike put the Company in a precarious financial position. 3. This is not the first time this has happened, but rumor and misunderstanding seem to be behind some of the union members' resentment.

This is the eighth strike by machinests in Boeing’s 108-year history — it comes as the company faces intense regulatory scrutiny, production delays, quality issues and increasing debt. Historically machinists strikes at Boeing average about 50 days, the last one 57 days taking Boeing 2 years to recover, however the machinest walked away with very little to show for two months off the job. Back then in 2008, Boeing had record profits and a record backlog of orders exceeding 3000 aircraft. The company back then threatened to shut production in Washington state and move it east. Should the company decide they can’t afford to make previous threats stick, can’t afford the effects of lost productivity, can’t afford their stock price dropping more, can’t afford another layer of struggle in its current recovery from production delays and can’t afford its credit rating to tank if the strike is prolonged making borrowing or raising debt more difficult, then one would bet that this strike will be shortened.

☄️Boeing Is Losing $100 Million To $150 Million A Day Due To Union Strike ⏺Boeing is caught between a rock and a hard place as the strike between it and the International Association of Machinists (IAM) union continues into its second week. ⏺On Monday, September 23, Boeing increased its offer to the union, which represents 33,000 workers. However, the company did not approach the union leadership, but instead sent its “best and final” proposal directly to the workers, which did not please the IAM. ⏺Boeing's latest offer raised wages to 30% from 25% in the previous offer, doubled the signing bonus to $6,000 and increased 401k contributions, among other things. However, as was the case with the first offer, participants remained uninterested in the company's latest offer, which was sent out through the media. ⏺Boeing's insistence on reaching out directly to union members speaks to the challenges the company faces. Boeing is already forced to conduct a significant reassessment of its financial performance. Every day Boeing goes on strike, they lose between $100 million and $150 million. ⏺Without union members working at Boeing's assembly plant in Renton, Washington, the company will be unable to deliver its cash cow, the 737 Max jet. Boeing can still supply its 787 Dreamliners from its nonunion South Carolina plant, but the number of the planes is limited. Boeing delivered 70 737 Max planes in the second quarter, but only nine of its larger Dreamliners.
