In Cali, the #COP16Colombia programme features #PlaceQuebec, a space for dialogue and multi-stakeholder engagement funded by the Canadian province’s government. Parallel events include a Children and Youth Summit, 17 pavilions held by governments and intergovernmental organizations, a capacity building and development forum, a technology and innovation expo, and forums for parliamentarians, indigenous peoples and local communities, Women, businesses, local authorities, the science community, and other stakeholder groups. NaturaTechLAC: Digital MRVs to unleash innovative finance for nature based solutions We are very proud to present @NaturaTechLAC, a #biodiversity conservation #innovation initiative led by @BID Lab, as part of our Green Entrepreneurship Engine approach. Its objective is to accelerate the effectiveness, scalability and transparency of the #conservation and #regeneration of #biodiversity through the use of #cutting-edge #purposeful technologies and #inclusive strategies in Latin America and the Caribbean. NaturaTech LAC is also co-led by the Future of Earth Lab of @C Minds, with funders such as @Climate Collective and the French Government, among others that we will announce soon. It has collaborators such as the Stockholm Resilience Center of @StockholmUniversity, among other key institutions. I am pleased that through #NaturaTechLAC we will be advancing on several transformative fronts, exploring new #decentralized financial schemes and leading the revolution in digital #MRV for greater trust and transparency in nature-based solutions in the region. Additionally, we will be promoting the ethical use of technology for this field, enabling innovative public policy prototypes to promote and guide emerging nature-based markets, and connecting initiatives to amplify biodiversity conservation. This regional and collaborative complements other IDB Lab actions that we are carrying out on climate innovation and bioeconomy; as well as other key IDB initiatives such as the Natural Capital Lab and Amazon Forever, scaling a collective impact. Last week, Expertise France and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH co-organized an event to discuss 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 and solutions to align capital flows to #KMGBF targets, especially 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝟏𝟗 (see link to the event summary in comment below). 𝗣𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 COP16 Colombia, they reflected on challenges and opportunities to bridge the gap and place 𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒇𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔. 👉 BIODEV2030 directly tackles this challenge, by engaging all stakeholders in the dialogue on 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴, including the Ministries of Finance & Economy. 🌍 Aiming to develop 15 pilot projects at landscape level, BIODEV2030 supports the private sector and local communities in the transition towards more sustainable producing practices. Natural capital, also known as ecosystem services, is the next “capital market”. Yes, natural capital needs to be valued rather than being taken for granted, but the problem is when this “market” collapses there will be no going back. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2024 Global Risks Report, loss of biodiversity (one of natural capital's five pillars) and ecosystem collapse is the third top 10 problem in a decade’s time and right now one million species are on the brink of extinction. The challenge for institutional investors now is reassessing traditional portfolio construction to include impact themes such as biodiversity. At Phenix Capital Group Impact Seminar Series UK in London on Wednesday 25th, Gemma Roex and I will deliver a masterclass for Investors on The Real Weight of Biodiversity in Portfolio Construction. Biodiversity is a subset of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal Life on Land (SDG15), but more 250,000 species live in the ocean. Oceans cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface; produce at least 50% of the oxygen; absorb around 25% of all the atmospheric carbon dioxide; and have absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat produced since the Industrial Revolution. From food and transport, to energy and climate, the gross annual value-add of the ocean’s ecosystem services is estimate to have the potential to double to $3 trillion by 2030. For this, I am delighted to be interviewing Raphaël Ghiandai, Chief Financial Officer at Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco, an active investor and advocate for the ocean, to discuss ‘Investing in the blue economy: Why joining the dots is key to accelerating change’. A heartfelt thank you to our panelists for their invaluable participation in the panel “The Role of Business in the Effective Implementation of LATAM Countries’ NBSAPs” during #COP16. The discussion brought to light both the opportunities and challenges for companies in Latin America working to support National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). Some key conclusions: 🔹 Unique Challenges in LATAM: Operating in biodiversity-rich regions presents companies with the responsibility to address and assess biodiversity risks and impacts in diverse, innovative ways. 🔹 The Role of the Financial Sector: Investors are key players in advancing NBSAPs and nature-positive initiatives. By creating selection mechanisms, they are paving the way to identify and support projects that contribute to a nature-positive future. 🔹 Commitment and Impact: Our panelists shared inspiring examples of how their biodiversity conservation efforts are positively impacting local communities and driving economic benefits. 🔹 The Role of Business Associations: Effective collaboration with business associations was recognized as crucial for successfully engaging the private sector in achieving NBSAP goals.
