Problem gambling can severely impact financial stability and decision-making. A crucial step in recovery is building barriers to accessing money. This can include removing ATM cards, limiting credit cards, and enlisting trusted individuals to assist with financial management. These measures can significantly reduce the risk of financial and emotional distress associated with problem gambling, promoting healthier financial habits and supporting long-term recovery. Gambling can pose significant challenges for some individuals. To promote awareness during Safer Gambling Week, here are five strategies to assist those affected: ✅ Educate Yourself: Individuals facing gambling issues often feel a loss of control. Understanding their experiences can enable you to provide the most effective support. ✅ Communicate Openly: When discussing someone’s gambling habits, express your concerns compassionately. If they feel understood, they are more likely to engage in an honest dialogue, which can lead to collaborative recovery planning. ✅ Implement Financial Safeguards: Encourage users to use gambling-blocking tools like BetBlocker or suggest they consult their bank for options to better manage their finances. ✅ Avoid Enabling Behaviors: Lending money to someone who gambles can exacerbate their situation. Instead, create a system that rewards positive actions. Remember that repaying debts can be a vulnerable time for someone in recovery. ✅ Prioritise Your Well-being: Regardless of your feelings, avoid self-blame or placing blame on the individual struggling with gambling. Recognise that gambling disorder is a recognized medical condition influenced by various factors. For more information, go to https://lnkd.in/dpi4u85 #SGWeek24 @SGWeek

This is a really insightful article describing one person's experience of gambling addiction, which he can track back to when he was just 9 years' old. We always talk about the fact that gambling harms can literally impact every aspect of someone's wellbeing, and in this case it did exactly that: Financial wellbeing - aged just 17 when he took out his first loan to fund his gambling; ultimately ending up bankrupt Career - unable to return to working in the financial sector due to bankruptcy Relationships - borrowing money from friends; partners coming a "very distant second" to gambling Mental health - low moods, depression and suicidal ideation Due to his extensive borrowing from banks and other lenders, there were actually multiple opportunities for intervention along the way. But these interventions could only really take place if there was an understanding of what to look out for, how to start this kind of conversation and where to signpost people for support with gambling harms. Very few of us can gamble responsibly. Please be safe out here #web3. If you can't handle gambling, please consider PandaMania...we are NOT a gamble. Just buy and hold...you will get so much value with us. "Compulsive gambling, also called gambling disorder, is the uncontrollable urge to keep gambling despite the toll it takes on your life. Gambling means that you're willing to risk something you value in the hope of getting something of even greater value. Gambling can stimulate the brain's reward system much like drugs or alcohol can, leading to addiction. If you have a problem with compulsive gambling, you may continually chase bets that lead to losses, use up savings and create debt. You may hide your behavior and even turn to theft or fraud to support your addiction. Compulsive gambling is a serious condition that can destroy lives. Although treating compulsive gambling can be challenging, many people who struggle with compulsive gambling have found help through professional treatment."

👀 Why We Gamble and How to Stay in Control Gambling is exciting and sociable, but risky. We gamble for the excitement of winning, the social atmosphere, and a break from routine. But it's so easy to get hooked and to start chasing losses—on the way to financial and emotional issues. Set time and monetary limits, know the odds and have regular breaks to keep you in control. Know when to take one's losses and walk away, rather than try to win them back. If one has a problem doing that, there is help from friends, and family, in person, on the phone, and through professional helplines and self-exclusion programs. When gambling, remember to have fun and enjoy yourself—don't gamble to make a living out of it. Follow us to engage with more of our tips on Safer Gambling 🎰
