On 22 and 23 May, #PtX Hub was invited to participate in the big @Sustainable Aviation Futures Congress 2024 #SAFEU, in Amsterdam. On the panel “PtL and eFuels feedstock and technology focus: Evaluating production pathways - Methanol to jet, DAC, FT and more…”, addressing diverse #SAF production pathways, Ruth Barbosa brought in the perspective of international cooperation and skills development. Key points Ruth Barbosa covered: ➡ When evaluating and testing different pathways to decarbonise aviation fuels, it is compulsory to involve emerging economies from the outset, leveraging their local potentials. The transformation of the aviation sector opens significant opportunities for local development. ➡ Capacity development at various levels is crucial, targeting decision-makers and multipliers who can disseminate the topic of SAF in academia and TVET worldwide. Other key take aways from the numerous sessions of the event: ➡ Creating favourable conditions for Financial Investment Decisions (FID) remains the key challenge for the ramp-up of SAF projects. ➡Debates on the most effective policy measures continue: subsidies, mandates, or penalties? ➡Avoidance of contrails and other non-CO2 effects will significantly help clean aviation, and research is progressing well in this area! Japanese research institute IHI Corporation and Singapore’s Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy and Environment (ISCE) have announced an exciting partnership to install a small-scale CO2 and hydrogen-to-sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Singapore. This initiative aims to synthesize liquid hydrocarbons from hydrogen and CO2 as raw materials for SAF. The companies plan to install test equipment at ISCE premises by September and commence small-scale testing, injecting 100 kg of CO2 per day, by the end of the year. Responding to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) call to reduce airline sector CO2 emissions, IHI is developing catalysts and efficient processes for direct SAF production from CO2 and hydrogen. In 2022, they developed a new catalyst for SAF synthesis, confirmed to have world-class performance in laboratory tests. (Head Office: California, USA; CEO: Valery Miftakhov; hereinafter “ZeroAvia”), which develops and manufactures hydrogen-electric engines. ZeroAvia appointed ITOCHU as a sales representative in Asia, and an MOU was also signed with ZeroAvia regarding collaborations in multiple fields, including maintenance, airport infrastructure and hydrogen infrastructure in the region. It is expected that there will be approximately 44,000 commercial aircraft in 2042 (1.6 times the number in 2023).* With the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) announcing their goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the decarbonization of the aviation industry is an international challenge and, to solve the issue, new technologies in addition to SAF, such as hydrogen aircraft, are necessary.

China's COMAC tests SAF on regional, passenger aircraft State-owned aerospace manufacture Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) announced that it has successfully tested sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on regional jet ARJ21 and large passenger aircraft C919. The company said that SAF utilised in the flight was produced from used cooking oil (UCO) collected from restaurants.
