Let’s talk about soil. 🌱 Current farming practices have normalised methods that harm soil health, impacting animal health, human health, water quality, and the economy. Heavy use of synthetic fertilisers, especially inorganic nitrogen—and excessive pesticides and herbicides degrade the soil microbiome. Crop and grazing practices further strip the soil, reducing biodiversity and accelerating carbon and water loss. 🧪💧 In New Zealand, dairy is often based on low-diversity, shallow-rooted ryegrass and clover pastures. This lack of diversity weakens soil function, increasing erosion, flood and drought vulnerability, and dependency on chemicals. Every year, over 200 million tonnes of soil are lost to the ocean due to erosion, carrying away crucial organic carbon with it. 🌊 The solution? ✨ A shift to Holistic Management and regenerative farming practices!
