🌍 Where are the global ideas capitals? When it comes to financial powerhouses, London and New York are obvious leaders, as finance often outpaces other industries from a GDP perspective. However, innovation transcends finance encompassing many forms of ideas; creative, artistic, philosophical, scientific, technological, educational, cultural, political and more.
One such global ideas capital is Cambridge, England, currently ranking third globally for its scientific and technological contributions. From the invention of the jet engine to breakthroughs in computer gaming, Cambridge has continually pushed the boundaries of human imagination. Today, it represents 18% of the UK's overall technology ecosystem value according to Dealroom.co.
That’s why I was thrilled to join Irene Graham OBE from the ScaleUp Institute on stage last week at Cambridge Tech Week at The Cambridge Union, where we discussed a crucial topic: how to support the scaling of deep technology companies. While the UK is at a generational high for startups and ranks third globally for tech investment (behind the US and China), scaling remains a challenge. One key barrier is the lack of experienced leaders who have successfully scaled companies from 50 to 2,500+ employees. Also finding talented individuals to join those companies who have a growth mindset -- and are willing to take risks, and have the determination to weather the highs and lows of scaling a business, as the highs are very high and the lows are well...very low.
This is why the launch of new programs such as Sync announced at Cambridge Tech Week from Founders at the University of Cambridge, which supports emerging founders with other co-founders, advisors, coaches, etc, are so essential. These efforts will help bridge the gap, enabling more UK companies to scale and thrive.
It was also great to see many industry leaders speaking on the day including Sherry Coutu CBE, Janet Coyle CBE, Hermann Hauser, Stan Boland, and insights from serial entrepreneur Rupert Baines. Their wealth of experience is invaluable to the next generation of innovators. In short, the whole week was full of dialogues, debates and conversations about how the UK and Cambridge can continue to excel in deep tech, life sciences, sustainability, biotech, advanced technologies, physical sciences, advanced materials, semiconductors, and much more.
Huge congratulations to Chris Bruce and the team at Cambridge Wireless Ltd for organising such a successful event!
BTW, any other ideas capitals you can think? Aside from LA, Shenzhen and Boston?
