Excited to announce that I have co-authored a chapter in the 31st Youth Knowledge Book by the European Commission and the Council of Europe, titled *Youth and Democracy in the Climate Crisis*. Chapter 4, *Youth at International Climate Negotiations: Profiles, Motivation, and Impact*, was written in collaboration with PhD Yi hyun Kang and PhD Amandine Orsini from Universit�� catholique de Louvain, Belgium. This chapter explores the pivotal role that youth play in international climate negotiations, challenges for and in participation, highlighting their passion, innovation, and determination to influence global climate policy. 🌱 Excited to share that I was selected for the 2024 cohort of the Global Youth Climate Training Programme! This program, jointly delivered by researchers at Oxford Net Zero and Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment - University of Oxford alongside a coalition of climate youth change makers at The Global Youth Coalition, focuses on the critical role of sub-state and non-state actor accountability in climate policy. Out of over 10,000 applications, only 285 participants were chosen, yielding an acceptance rate of just 3%! This year, I am part of an incredible cohort of young leaders from 135 countries, including 227 from the Most Affected People and Areas, 141 from Vulnerable Twenty (V20) countries, and 69 from Indigenous Communities. I am incredibly grateful to be among such a dedicated group tackling the climate crisis. As an islander (and someone from a region like mine), I understand firsthand the challenges of climate change. Rising temperatures, hurricanes, and sargassum influxes are just some of the issues we face, despite contributing minimally to the problem. While I have actively supported diverse causes through the NGO sector (including environmental ones), I recognize the need to further strengthen my knowledge of climate change and develop my skills in communications and storytelling specific to this topic. This program has been invaluable in helping me understand the importance of these areas in driving climate action. Now more than halfway through the program, I have learned so much about the complexities of climate action. This year's focus on non-state actors is particularly timely. Cities, regional governments, businesses, and civil society groups have significant potential to enhance national climate ambitions. However, it's crucial to assess the legitimacy of non-state actor commitments, as they can sometimes be misleading. Initiatives like the Net Zero Tracker aim to clarify the quality of these commitments, emphasizing the need for greater literacy in credible climate action to combat greenwashing. My Journey Through the Native Youth Club for Climate Change - NYCCC Fellowship 🌱 From July to September 2024, I had the privilege of participating in the Native Youth Club for Climate Change - NYCCC Fellowship. Each module deepened my understanding of climate challenges and solutions. Module I kicked off with the science behind climate change, emphasizing the urgent need for action. In Module II, we explored Pakistan’s climate crisis, led by Dr. Habib Jan. Module III focused on adaptation strategies, while Module IV covered climate mitigation, offering practical steps for change. Module V introduced the 3 R’s—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Module VI stressed the importance of climate education, and Module VII provided insights into climate finance. Finally, Module IX wrapped up with climate justice and planning. Key Takeaways: The fellowship not only provided me with a wealth of knowledge but also equipped me with practical tools to contribute to climate action. I now feel a deeper sense of responsibility toward the environment and the need to drive change at both the community and policy levels. Each module brought unique insights, from the science of climate change to the financial and policy frameworks needed for mitigation. This journey has been inspiring, giving me the tools and knowledge to take meaningful action for a sustainable future. “The climate crisis is the biggest threat to our survival as a species and is already threatening human rights around the world.” – UN Secretary-General António Guterres, February 2020. I am thrilled to share that I have completed a course titled "An Introduction to Climate Change and Human Rights." This course reinforced my understanding of how deeply interconnected our environment and human rights are. It explored how our human rights obligations compel us to fight climate change more aggressively, with a focus on justice for those most affected. As we confront increasing challenges from climate change, integrating human rights considerations into our environmental actions becomes more crucial than ever. This certificate bolsters my commitment to being part of the solution, advocating for policies and actions that are not just effective but are also equitable. As young changemakers, we must be aware of our planet's situation—it is our responsibility to create a sustainable future where human rights are upheld, and our planet is protected. #ClimateAction #HumanRights #SustainableFuture

A recent international study, led by the University of Nottingham, highlights a crucial gap in global understanding: while the term "climate justice" may not be widely recognized, the principles behind it resonate deeply across the world. Surveying 5,627 adults from 11 countries, the research found that two-thirds of people had never heard of climate justice, yet many acknowledged the unequal impacts of the climate crisis. Key findings show: 🔸 78% of people agreed that poorer communities face the worst impacts of climate change. 🔸 There’s strong belief that those most affected by climate change should have a greater voice in decision-making (also 78% agreement). 🔸 70% of participants recognized that systems like capitalism and colonialism are driving forces behind the climate crisis. This study is a wake-up call for me as well. As someone who is relatively new to the social impact space, I’ve learned that there’s always room to educate myself on matters that deeply affect people, including myself as a Black woman who witnesses firsthand the impacts of inequality. The challenge lies in ensuring that more people, especially in vulnerable communities, are familiar with the framework of climate justice so that they can actively participate in solutions. The opportunity lies in leveraging the widespread recognition of social and economic inequalities within the climate crisis to drive stronger advocacy and policy change. While the terminology may be unfamiliar, the issues are not. The climate crisis amplifies longstanding injustices, and our responses must prioritize those who are least responsible but most affected. It’s essential that we not only recognize these inequities but that we act—ensuring that the voices of frontline communities guide the solutions. The more we elevate awareness, the closer we get to truly just climate policies. Loved hearing insights from Doris Mwikali about youth climate advocacy on digital platforms this morning at UNESCO Digital Learning Week! One of the strategies she spoke to was "prebunking" climate myths and denialism: in this approach, social media users proactively post factual content about climate change and its impacts, rather than waiting to counter mis- and dis- information. "(with prebunking) you're putting a human face to it, letting your community know why it's important, rather than waiting for climate disinformation and trying to debunk it. Nobody ever wins an argument on the internet." Ms. Mwikali also highlighted the connection between effective climate advocacy and meaningful improvements to social media platforms (and the regulations that govern them), noting: "...We need to start discussing how there can be proper guidelines on social media, because if every young person is talking about climate change and the algorithms are keeping anyone from seeing it, then we've lost the battle before it's even started."

The Paper Pledge is a global collaboration of hundreds of institutions working together to make climate change literature openly available. There are over 3500 climate change articles that have been published in the last 5 years that are closed access, but can be made openly available. Today, COAR Global, EIFL, Creative Commons and other regional, national, and institutional partners – in collaboration with the #OpenClimateCampaign – launch a global effort to make this critical knowledge available to the world.
