Dear Friends, Happy Planet Wednesday! And to American followers, Happy Thanksgiving! During the presidential debates, we heard a lot about the nearly five million unit housing shortage in the US. This needs to be addressed urgently but it won't be good for the climate. Traditional building activity accounts for up to 40% of there world's carbon emissions. Our guest Nick Farmer is president of OPAL Build, a Maine company whose mission is to reduce the #carbon footprint in #homebuilding. And do it at a discount. Nick's entrepreneurial story is also unique. Unlike many entrepreneurs who start from scratch, Nick took his ideas to an existing company and joined forces. And it looks like they are positioned for success. Listen on Apple , Spotify, our website (happyplanetpodcast.com), or pretty much anywhere you listen to podcasts! I'd like to thank our sponsors: Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Bold Ocean Ventures have partnered to create a mission-driven venture capital fund, supporting the growth of innovative, sustainable ocean-related businesses. Startup Marin Skincare has rocketed thanks to products made with Maine-lobster-derived glycoprotein that work on eczema and dry skin. Former guest on our show and co-Founder Patrick Breeding is offering listeners a 20% discount on their skincare products. Type HAPPYPLANET into the coupon code field! Spark No. 9, ensures that companies - and startups - have successful product launches by testing their products online. Remove the guesswork before you launch! Program partners include OCEANOVATION, Investable Oceans and Bright Tide. #maine Happy Planet Podcast

If you are a founder, you must be able to answer this question: Is your idea a solution looking for a problem? I believe that this question is genius. But is just one of the gems that José Luis Cabañero brought to the podcast José Luis, founder of Eatable Adventures, has a clear vision: Startups and corporations must collaborate to drive real change in food production. And trust me when I say, that there is much more. Curious about what’s next for food innovation? Dive into this episode and get ahead. This one you can't miss. Great new book for startup founders and investors: "Pattern Breakers" (https://lnkd.in/en86P9-8), by Mike Maples, Jr and Peter Ziebelman. Based an an analysis of many highly successful startups that Mike invested in over the last 20 years. Provides clear elements as predictors of scalability potential, like: * Inflections: changes in the outside world, which open up new opportunities. Could be a technical change, like high-speed mobile networking, or an environmental change, like global warming, which leads to the need to adopt wind, solar, EVs etc. * Insights: A unique understanding of how to make use of these inflections and enable a future that the founders believe in. * Ideas: A product or service based on these unique founder insights. * Founder-future fit: Why are these founders the best people to turn these ideas into a succesful company. There is a lot more in the book, which I now use to assess every investment opportunity. If you don't have enough time to read the book, I recommend to listen to the excellent interview at Lenny Rachitsky's podcast (https://lnkd.in/e9GA47aW) of July 7, where he interviewed Mike Maples. The book is also available in audio form, with the voices of the authors, which gives it an extra touch. Good for long car rides and holiday. Have fun!

This week’s episode starts with Nicky Dee telling us about how she went from an accidental PhD to entrepreneurship, and from #cleantech to #climatetech, culminating in a 20-year (to date) career in impact-driven innovation. Nicky’s early experiences highlighted that there were lots of startups with ideas, most with great intent, but that they were hard to scale and that the measure of a company should not be dictated by what they earn, but by what they do. As CEO of Carbon13 Nicky now creates action on climate through innovation and entrepreneurship by bringing together talented individuals to build and scale impactful ventures capable of mitigating 10 million tonnes (net) of CO2E per year. With a portfolio of 70 companies, representing 30 nationalities, there is no shortage of great ClimateTech to showcase. Three highlighted on the podcast were: Bluemethane – removing methane at scale Kita – carbon insurer, de-risking carbon removal solutions Materials Nexus – revolutionising how new loc-carbon sustainable materials are discovered and developed Nicky talks to us about the venture builder and launchpad programmes, setting up in Berlin and funding. We also talk about whether Cambridge is doing enough to drive Climate Tech, look at other centres of excellence including Berlin, South East Asia, and the US, and start to discuss what we need to do to keep Cambridge / UK companies migrating to the US. Follow Carbon13 for updates on funding, plus potential new locations for programmes, and as Nicky asks, let’s keep telling the stories to accelerate traction. In the recent podcast episode with Understanding VC, our founder Sebastien Picard spoke about systemic innovation and how the ecosystem approach impacts strategic execution and accelerates market entry and adoption. The conversation also delves deeper into the benefits for different stakeholders in the innovation landscape, including investors, corporations, and startups. While there is no such thing as a Success Formula in venture building, we can harness the power of ecosystems to orchestrate and mitigate risks throughout the journey. Systemic innovation is an approach to innovation that involves changes across multiple components of a socio-economic system, rather than isolated improvements. This type of innovation is characterised by its holistic perspective, aiming to address complex, interconnected problems by considering the entire system in which these problems exist. Some of the key points mentioned in the conversation: Network of Hidden Innovations 🌐 : Systemic innovation often involves multiple, complementary innovations that need to be coordinated and integrated within a larger system. Systemic Change and Transition 🚦 : It focuses on transformative changes and system transitions, involving a paradigm shift to create long-term, sustainable solutions rather than short-term fixes.
