Mothers caring for children with disabilities demonstrate immense strength and resilience in facing complex challenges. Society must recognize their dedication and provide robust support. Integrated Schools is nearly a 100% volunteer organization, and we all do this work because we can’t see the ways White supremacy and discrimination harm so many in our country and then simply sit down and be silent. We must take action and put our values into practice. We must be more than words, aspirations, and platitudes. We must do the work, but this work is just that…work, and we need your help. From joining our Caregiver Connection to our social media team to our administrative team, there are so many ways you can join us and volunteer with us. We work with each volunteer to customize their schedule so that supporting us fits within your work/life balance, and we customize your volunteer work to the areas of the organization that you feel the most passionate about. Whether you have a large amount of time or only a little, every minute of support helps us and helps end discrimination and segregation. So if you want to put your values into action, please volunteer with us. Monday Motivation: A Magnificent Mission for Movement I'm incredibly fortunate to be spending time this week with the inspiring Bentley family. Their story is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the human spirit. When their son, MJ, was diagnosed with Pallister-Killian Syndrome (PKS), a rare genetic disorder, they embarked on a remarkable journey to create a world of possibilities for MJ and children like him. Motion Junction is a tangible manifestation of their unwavering love and determination. This extraordinary playground is a meticulously designed space where every child, regardless of ability, can experience the joy of play and movement. From the moment they conceived this idea, the Bentleys faced countless hurdles – fundraising, navigating complex regulations, and overcoming the physical and emotional challenges of raising a child with special needs. But their passion and perseverance have created a place that is truly magical. As we celebrate Disability Awareness Month, it's essential to recognize the incredible impact individuals like the Bentleys have on our communities. Their work is a powerful reminder that inclusion is not just a buzzword, but a fundamental right. By creating spaces like Motion Junction, they are breaking down barriers and fostering a more compassionate and understanding world. Let's be inspired by the Bentley family's courage and commitment. Let's use this week to reflect on how we can contribute to a more inclusive society. Together, we can build a world where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential. "There's been study after study that has shown that people do better academically, they do better with self-care, they have better overall outcomes, they're healthier and happier when they're in a community versus an institution." Take some time out of your day to watch this brief documentary (20 minutes) that sheds light on the systemic issues in Illinois related to housing and programming for individuals with disabilities and complex needs. This is NOT a new issue, and I am deeply grateful that there is more attention on this to create awareness and meaningful change. Even just implementing ASL training for staff providing support services to disabled folks will allow for more person-centered care and opportunities (see Ed's story). If you are interested in learning more about -finding a network -gathering information and receiving a roadmap to create inclusive community housing -finding person-centered services for disabled individuals residing in the community, reach out to Center for Independent Futures! https://lnkd.in/grsCTihR
