Credit to Arlin Wasserman May 31, 2024 Food waste is a huge problem. Here's how new innovations can help prevent it https://lnkd.in/gZuqjr8D 1). The food sector is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for one-third of all emissions, according to the United Nations. Reducing food waste can play a crucial role in lowering these emissions. 2). In regions dependent on local agriculture, food waste can emerge when producing food; in affluent areas with a global food supply chain, the issue lies more with consumer waste and inefficient food usage. 3). Modern techniques, such as advanced drying food methods, are emerging as effective solutions to food waste. Companies are developing technologies to convert food scraps into nutritious flavours and supplements without using excessive heat.

Should YOU Care About Food Waste in Asia Pacific?.. 📉 50% of the world's food waste in retail happens in Asia Pacific. 🍽️ ⅔ of the world's food waste in food service occurs in APAC. 🌍 8 to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to food lost and wasted. 👉 There is NO WAY we can reach the UN SDG Goals by 2030 if we don’t tackle the issue here in the APAC F&B industry. So yes, it affects us all, anywhere in the world. Impossible target?!? 🚨 Food waste across the region will grow 24% by 2030 if we keep a business-as-usual approach. 🌟 Late but not far : Adopting best-in-class practices from South Korea or Singapore could achieve nearly a 45% reduction in the food service sector, and up to an 80% reduction with global best-in-class methods. 👉 Hard but doable. Other countries have done it. Every small step counts from local stakeholders: #startups, #FnBbusinesses, #corporates, #governments, #consumers. 💡Discover Food Waste Management Innovations at Techsauce Global Summit: 🌟 Yindii will showcase its solution at the AgriFoodTech Startup Showcase organized by SPACE-F, August 8th, 12-12.30pm Want to Know More About the Food Waste Problem? 📖 "No Time To Waste" Read this brilliant summary of the food waste crisis by Michelle Huang, Sudip Sinha from Rabobank Asia https://lnkd.in/gmh9RBHK

I love this idea 🍌🥭🥑🍅... With statistics like: ➡️ "Over 1/3 of all food produced globally goes to waste" (Business Waste LTD) ➡️ "Every day 40% of fruits and vegetables are wasted" due to the belief that 'Ripe Is Wrong' (Green Nudges) In Colombia 6.1 million tons of food is wasted annually 🤯 (according to the Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) & the National Department of Planning). To combat this, Makro Supermarkets 🛒 launched a fresh sustainability initiative across 22 stores- aiming to reduce food waste and educate consumers on budget-friendly prevention methods! 🪄 They transformed the traditional fruit sticker into eco-friendly 'Life Extending Stickers' to let customers know the produce is still good, prolong produce life & suggests recipes based on ripeness & colour (💭Genius!) I think this could be a great method to combat food waste in the UK also- as the UK produces one of the highest amounts of food waste in Europe 😅 Waste Managed highlighted 2024 UK food waste facts: ➡️ UK wastes approximately 9.52 million tonnes of food every year. ➡️ This total is enough to feed upwards of 30 million people a year, yet 8.4 million live in food poverty in the UK ➡️ WRAP estimates that 70% of food waste comes from households (6.7 million tonnes), 16% from manufacturers, 12% from hospitality and food services, and 2% from the retail industry. ➡️ 6.4 million tonnes (67%) of this wasted food could have been eaten 😲! In UK households, it’s estimated that this number climbs to as high as 70%. Image credits to: https://lnkd.in/eKYJU9Kq

Soil is just dirt, Myth or Fact? Soil is a living, breathing ecosystem that deserves the utmost care and attention. So how can we treat it with the love it needs? By implementing national initiatives we can significantly impact our region's agriculture and help halt the spread of desertification. According to the UNEP's Food Waste Index Report 2024 https://lnkd.in/dRdbXsFz , food recycling initiatives transform food waste into nutrient-rich compost, enhancing soil structure and fertility and vastly reduces greenhouse emissions such methane. This process is crucial for the MENA region's arid climate as it improves water retention, promotes healthy plant growth, and reduces soil erosion. By maintaining soil cover and preventing land degradation, composting supports sustainable agriculture and combats desertification. Impact on Agriculture Enhanced Soil Fertility: Compost enriches the soil with essential nutrients, boosting crop yields and quality. Water Retention: Improved soil structure through composting increases the soil's ability to retain water, crucial for farming in arid climates. Cost Reduction: Reduced reliance on chemical fertilisers lowers costs for farmers and promotes organic farming practices. Combating Desertification Soil Stabilisation: Healthy plant growth facilitated by compost helps stabilise the soil, reducing erosion and preventing land degradation. Carbon Sequestration: Composting reduces greenhouse gas emissions from landfills and promotes carbon sequestration in soils, mitigating climate change impacts. Sustainable Practices: Encouraging composting fosters a circular economy, reducing waste and promoting sustainable land management practices. Supporting composting is a step towards a sustainable future and a healthier planet, particularly for regions like MENA that face significant environmental challenges. At IN2, we specialise in developing effective community driven communication strategies to support climate action and sustainability initiatives.
