Umberg/Zipser LLP attorney, Todd W. Smith, has authored an insightful article for the Orange County Lawyer (November Issue) published by the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA). The article is entitled “I Just Met You…This is Crazy...An Examination of Ethical Duties Owed to Prospective Clients—Even If You’re Not Retained.” In the article, Todd discusses ethical duties that arise when a lawyer consults with a prospective client, as well as tips for avoiding potential conflicts of interest that can arise from such a consultation. Our newest survey on Gen-Z lawyers' attitudes towards Big Law is out. What are Gen-Z lawyers saying about Big Law life? Mostly good things. 83% would choose to work for the same firm again if given the opportunity. Notably, only 24% report wanting to transition to an in-house role as their ultimate career goal vs. 33% wanting to make partner. Will this imbalance eventually result in the in-house lawyer pipeline drying up? My perspective: The perception that moving in-house is a tradeoff, with lawyers accepting reduced compensation in exchange for better work-life balance is dubious (at least the second part of that equation). Most in-house lawyers I know wish they had more hours in a day to handle the non-stop stream of inbound requests. #legalcareers #mlaglobal #biglaw #genzlawyers
