It was a great 4 days of learnings and meeting peers. As I sit down and reflect: - No system is perfect. Singapore’s social ecosystem receives great support from the government. This shapes how our Charities deliver our services. We should be thankful, but how can we get better? - Philanthropy plays a big role in Hong Kong more than government intervention. Our Charities need to get better in how we articulate the value and impact of our work to encourage more philanthropic money. - Collective action is not easy, but becoming increasingly important not only in HK but in SG as well. Certain structures in HK seed the ground for more collaboration, we need to find our own way. - Purpose and tenacity trumps all. I cannot begin to tell you the admiration I have for the HK Charities I met as they continue to serve even when faced with tremendous odds. There are 10,000 Charities fighting for the same dollar. Clarity of purpose is paramount! It was good to get out of the comfort zone. I leave with gratitude, gratitude in knowing that I am not alone, gratitude that sometimes our problems are not so big. #philanthropycollective #nextgenchangemakers

There is a power dynamic between grant-giving and grant-seeking charities. Ideological stances on diversity, equity and wealth and their social redistribution aside for the moment, we are not in a time yet where societal need is automatically fulfilled. Whilst we may all wish this was the case, and for many charities their ultimate goal is to no longer be needed, for now there is more need than there are solutions. The trusts’ funds will always be theirs to distribute not yours to take. Keeping this in mind, give them a good reason to give their funds to you! The power dynamic can shift as you get to know them better and they get to know you. From the relationship you develop you can forge a partnership where together you can solve the really big problems we are all facing. Just remember to be a facilitator of any relationships, don’t force them; it’s always easier to catch flies (so to speak) with honey than vinegar. #TrustFundraising

‘What Makes a Great Charity’? 😊 🏆📢 Here is what Carly Severino of Australian Communities Foundation had to say; There are lots of factors that can make a charity great. Many great charities have a bold vision and a strong sense of how to get there, reflected in their strategy and activities. They can articulate their vision clearly and foster a sense of shared commitment to achieving it as a common goal. Great charities understand what makes them unique. They understand their remit and can tell their story to position themselves as best-placed to do what they do. Many great charities are led by a diverse range of people, seeking to shift power and amplify diverse voices. Great charities often have a learning culture and take the time to reflect. They evaluate their work to improve their approach and share these learnings with others. Great charities don’t need to tick every box. But the reality is they do need great funding. They need funders to trust them. They need funders who give unrestricted support. They need funders who give across many years and who are with them for the long haul. So let’s talk more about what makes a great funder. Australians are wonderfully generous 💞, and the not-for-profit sector benefits from it. According to McCridle's data of 2024, four in five Australians, or 84%, have given financially to charities or not-for-profits. It shows that there are over 59,000 registered charities that employ 1.42 million people and have an estimated 3.2 million volunteers in Australia. 75% of Australians give annually, and 24% give monthly. The interesting shift is from regular giving to spontaneous need-driven giving. This can be influenced by the fact that older generations prefer established charities while Gen Z favours start-up disrupters. Gen Y is the most neutral on giving to a start-up (44%) or an established charity (56%). On this Giving Tuesday, we salute Canadians that not only give today, but have philanthropy imprinted in their DNA.   We salute the culture of philanthropy.   Our firm is so lucky to be in the business of giving. Each year, the WCPD Foundation disburses gifts large and small to charities all across Canada on behalf of our clients. Through our Charity Flow-Through Structure, Canadians can drastically reduce the cost to give through tax efficiency, making them even more generous.   In today’s world, where the needs are so great, we must give Canadians more reasons to give, not less.   So here’s to the culture of philanthropy. Here’s to innovation. Here’s to having a philanthropic mindset not just on December 3rd, but in everything you do.
