New paper on the efficient dune design in front of dikes as a Nature Based Solution for coastal protection. Here we combined forces from aeolian physics and ecology to understand how the interplay between sand and vegetation shapes dune development (and how easy nature takes-over from human plans...)

It was a real treat to be invited to speak at the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) annual summer school on Friday. My talk was entitled 'Conservation in the age of digital revolution (industry 4.0): Reducing costs with new tools and skills'. This wee talk attempted to capture my thoughts on an array of progressive digital applications that our research has been focused on - We ultimately aspired to extract 'value' from digital data (digital reality capture / point clouds etc) and thereby enhance productivity in the surveying sector. The talk was contextualised around building survey, building pathology and sensitive fabric repair - it was hoped that by harnessing the bespoke well crafted algorithms that the team had developed, that limited budgets for conservation projects could be better utilised from often mundane survey operations towards fabric repair and essential routine maintenance. Whilst i'm sure that I forgot to mention much in my talk, myself and Frédéric Bosché had fortunately written a 3 page article in the IHBC year book which outlines a much more coherent distillation of years of collaborative research between Heriot Watt University, University of Edinburgh (Cyberbuild research group) & Historic Environment Scotland and other research in the field. I will post the link to the article when it goes live online (currently only available in hard copy version of the yearbook). This initiative brings together researchers from multiple universities to collaborate on key issues like climate change, economic development, and sustainable living in mountainous regions. Over a 4-day workshop, teams will work to create a medium-term research programme (5-6 years), combining expertise from various fields such as geography, hydrology, and environmental studies. The project will explore the impacts of environmental changes on mountain life across different regions, including the Swiss Alps, the Romanian Carpathians, and the Moroccan Atlas, aiming to find innovative solutions that benefit both the environment and local communities. 🤝 Why This Collaboration Matters: This project shows the power of collaboration within the CIVIS alliance. By bringing together scholars from CIVIS member universities and others, the initiative fosters an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by mountain communities. 🌿🌁URBIO BAUHAUS project officially started! 🐞 We are happy to announce that the project URBIO BAUHAUS - New European Bauhaus (NEB) for increasing urban biodiversity began in June 2024. The kick-off meeting took place in Wroclaw, Poland, hosted by the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences. Delegations from the 10 project partner institutions gathered to organise the collaborative work and officially initiate project's activities. The project aims at protecting and promoting urban biodiversity using the values of the New European Bauhaus initiative - sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion – as core guiding principles. Urban biodiversity solutions will be designed and implemented in 4 Central European cities: Pula, Kranj, Érd and Wroclaw. 📝Poliedra is leading WP3 - Transposing URBIO BAUHAUS Solutions into Policy and Governance - which focuses on providing a comprehensive legislative, policy and decision-making framework and delivering a Central European strategy for NEB-based urban biodiverse transitions. 📌 Follow along to discover the next steps and results of this project!
