🌭 Decoding America's Love Affair with Hot Dogs 🌭 The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council reports an astonishing consumption of approximately 20 billion hot dogs annually, clearly showing Americans believe there's no such thing as too many hot dogs! Hot dogs epitomize convenience—they are precooked, easy to prepare, and a staple at any backyard BBQ or ball game. They surged in popularity during the pandemic, with sales skyrocketing by 127% in March 2020 alone. Yet, despite their popularity, hot dogs represent a culinary oddity, often scrutinized for their mysterious ingredients and unconventional consumption patterns. Our love for hot dogs dates back to the 19th century, thanks to German immigrants who introduced their sausage-making traditions. These humble beginnings have become a nationwide phenomenon, with hot dogs symbolizing leisure and summertime fun. But it is not all relish and mustard; the hot dog industry faces challenges, from environmental concerns to fluctuating market prices. Still, the resilience of this frankfurter shows its undying place in American culture—whether as a budget-friendly meal or the subject of viral social media trends. So, whether you grill one at home or grab one at a game, the hot dog remains a beloved, albeit peculiar, piece of Americana. There are hidden dangers in taking your dog on the beach this summer – however much your dog likes to feel the sand between its toes…… Vet Dr Rebecca MacMillan, and TrustedHousesitters, are warning owners about the hidden hazards your beloved hound could face on the beach. While your dog might find discarded barbecue embers irresistible (no accounting for taste) and all part of a fun day, these perils could prove fatal for your furry friend. And other hazards? Dr MacMillan advises owners to be aware of large holes in the sand which could be a trip hazard for dogs chasing toys; saltwater (it can dehydrate them); jellyfish (in case they’re stung) and strong currents and waves. Also, be aware of potential heatstroke – certain breeds are more susceptible. And consider choosing a dog-friendly beach, advises TrustedHousesitters.

Here are some ideas to keep your pets safeClear garden undergrowth, fill in holes and mow your lawns regularly Rake up fallen leaves, flowers, branches etc. Clean up spilt food, fruit or birdseed that would attract rodents (who attract snakes)Don't let your pets sniff 'dead' snakes – they are still venomous and may be play-actingTrain your dog to respond immediately if you call – if you see them confronting a snake, you want them to listen to you, leave the snake and return to your side Walk your dog on a lead and don't let them run off through park or bushland Don't allow you dog to explore holes or run through long grass, despite how curious they areAnd my most significant piece of advice – don't approach snakes! If you find a snake on your property, please don't try to catch or kill it. Victoria has so many venomous snakes that will strike if provoked. Calmly take your animals inside and call your local snake
