Founded by Aloke Bajpai and Rajnish Kumar, OTA major ixigo's IPO opened today. 5 intriguing facts about Ixigo and the online travel agency (OTA) market that comes to light through Ixigo's IPO papers: 1. 80% of all the railway tickets in India are booked through online platforms like IRCTC, Ixigo and others- This in itself speaks volumes of the state of Digital India today. 2. Ixigo boasts a whopping 52% of the market share in the segment. To put it in simple terms, out of every 100 rail tickets booked, 80 are booked online, out of which 42 are booked through Ixigo. 3. Ixigo's future growth prospects may be hidden in the bus ticketing segment. Only 19% of bus tickets are booked online today. But this is expected to increase to 28% by 2028. To ride this growth, Ixigo acquired AbhiBus in Aug'21. In just 3 years since its acquisition, Abhibus' revenue has zoomed by 4.5X to INR 97Cr (Apr'23-Dec'23). 4. MakeMyTrip has created a formidable OTA empire as it commands more than 50% market share in online hotel bookings, 57% in air and 75% in bus (through redBus) segment.
