We are delighted to have been named one of the winning partners in the Ofwat Breakthrough Innovation Challenge for our participation in a research project to develop the world’s first blockage clearing pipebots. Working with NWG (Northumbrian Water Group), The University of Sheffield, as well as a number of other universities, WASC’s and suppliers, this project aims to find a way to proactively detect build-ups before they become a blockage, eradicating spills and sewer flooding and its devastating impact on customers. Current approaches using smart networks are reactive, but it is often too late to allow maintenance teams to locate and clear the blockage before flooding occurs. We are pleased to announce that NWG (Northumbrian Water Group), with EMS as a partner, has been awarded funding for Pipebot Patrol, as part of the Water Breakthrough Challenge! Pipebot Patrol will see the development of a sewer robot that will crawl through miles of the wastewater network to constantly inspect pipework and raise alerts to the precise location of blockages as they begin to form. Our innovation team are working with The University of Sheffield and Minicam to develop this. Dr Sonja Ostojin, the Head of Innovation at EMS, said: "It is great to be a part of this forward-thinking project team and to support the ambition to change the way the water industry is dealing with blockage detection and cleaning challenges. There is a need to be able to proactively detect and manage potential blockages within the network, therefore we must be able to rapidly identify the location of developing obstructions. EMS as a specialist systems integrator in environmental monitoring and compliance will share our knowledge and expertise on blockage detection.” This project is part of Ofwat's Water Breakthrough Challenge, a £40 million competition for solutions with the potential to deliver wide-scale transformational change to benefit customers, society and the environment.
