Great overview of the role of circular synthesis gas for the defossilization of the petrochemical industry by Harold Boerrigter and Sven Felske of Shell Catalysts & Technologies. In my view we cannot get even close to a Net Zero and Circular chemical industry without circular synthesis gas (syngas) and methanol. For the chemical industry it is only a single investmentcycle towards 2050, so let’s start building these future proof plants @Wael Sawan and produce Planet Positive Chemicals and Fuels😉! The oil and gas industry often focuses on upstream operations like extraction, drilling, and refining. However, the petrochemical sector is also a critical component. Products derived from petrochemicals, such as plastic products, contribute significantly to the industry's emission footprint. To achieve full decarbonization, the production processes and products of this sector require close attention. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a valuable tool for understanding the emission profile of these products across their entire lifecycle. This analysis can pinpoint emissions at each production stage. Today let's explore an example of LCA of a common petrochemical product, plastic bottle manufacturing share by Medium.com. *Credit Medium.com Ready to unlock the potential of carbon credits for your oil and gas company? 🌟 Insights from Future Downstream: Alan Gelder on Refining’s Role in Future Adaptation 🌟 At today’s virtual Future Downstream Conference, Alan Gelder, SVP Refining, Chemicals & Oil Markets at Wood Mackenzie, delivered an impactful presentation on "Refining Must Do Better to Provide a Platform for Future Adaptation." Here are key takeaways from Alan’s presentation: Refining margins, particularly those in Europe, returned to pre-pandemic levels and look to stay at those levels for the next year or so, before a rising tide lifts all boats into the early 2030s. AI can improve commercial performance - reducing unplanned could deliver material benefits. From the early 2030s onwards, regional crude runs decline the fastest in Europe, in part due to the cost of carbon emissions. Long-term asset viability requires sites to be competitive in both earnings and emissions. Petrochemical demand growth is a mega-trend. Petrochemicals integration improves competitive position with European sites the most advantaged. Tightening decarbonization targets requires biofuels to take a growing share of transport fuels, with SAF a key opportunity for Europe. Policy is a key risk for any renewable projects. What resonated most with you from Alan’s insights? Let us know in the comments! #FutureDownstream #RefiningInnovation #Petrochemicals #Biofuels #Decarbonization #AI #EnergyTransition
