Approximately 50,000 high school seniors will be recognized this week as National Merit scholars, with over 16,000 students named Semifinalists and about 34,000 named Commended Students. Students qualify for National Merit Scholarships by achieving a score threshold for their state on the PSAT taken during junior year. For the Class of 2025, the National Merit Scholarship Selection Index cutoff for Commended Students is 208. The state cutoffs for Semifinalist status range from 208 to 223. Of the 53 states/regions, including 50 states plus DC, US Territories, and Study Abroad students, 38 have increased cutoff scores, 14 remain the same, and 1 has a decreased cutoff score. Commended status cutoff score also increased from 207 to 208 for 2025. The University of Otago is again the top-performing university in New Zealand for student academic performance, based on key Government indicators. The Tertiary Education Commission’s latest annual Educational Performance Indicators have ranked Otago first among New Zealand’s eight universities for student qualification completion, first-year retention and progression, and second for course completion. Otago also ranked first-equal for Pacific student progression, second for Māori and Pacific student qualification completion, Māori and Pacific student retention and Māori student course completion, and third for Pacific student course completion.
