The Africa Food Systems Forum 2024 annual summit is the premier forum for African agriculture and food systems.
The theme for this year’s summit – Innovate, Accelerate and Scale: Delivering food systems transformation in a digital and climate era – underscores the urgent need to radically transform African food systems. This transformation should enhance local food production, bolster resilience to climate change, uplift African livelihoods, and harness the continent’s potential to tackle global challenges.
The theme highlights the need to prioritize three key actions: innovating, accelerating, and scaling up. Regarding innovation, the 2024 Summit will shine the spotlight on innovative policy delivery mechanisms, financing initiatives, research, and business models. As we evolve in a digital age, the summit will showcase cutting-edge technologies and equipment to manage climate impact, digital and financing gap, food waste and loss to name a few. Participants and delegates will have the opportunity at the Summit to network with the innovators and thought leaders driving these state-of-the-art technologies and developments.

I had the privilege of moderating the Farmer’s Forum at the recently concluded Africa Food Systems Forum in Kigali, an event that brought together over 5,000 delegates, including representatives from the African Development Bank, the World Food Programme, civil society, and the private sector.
This year's summit focused on transformative solutions for Africa's food systems, emphasizing the critical roles of youth and women in agriculture. Engaging discussions highlighted innovative approaches to enhance food security and nutrition across the continent.
The participation of diverse stakeholders underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing the challenges facing our food systems. Together, we explored actionable strategies to mobilize investments and foster sustainable agricultural practices that can uplift communities and drive economic growth.
Central to these discussions was the vital role of smallholder farmers, who produce up to 80% of the food in many developing regions and support the livelihoods of approximately 2.5 billion people. Despite their significance, smallholder farmers face numerous challenges, including limited access to resources and technology. However, with increased support and investment, they can significantly contribute to feeding Africa and driving economic growth. Their commitment to sustainable practices, such as agroforestry and crop diversification, positions them as key players in building resilient food systems.
As we move forward, it is imperative that we continue to engage in these vital strategies and implement the insights gained. The future of Africa’s food systems depends on our collective commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability.

The upcoming African Food Systems Forum in September 2024 will focus on the transformative work happening across Africa’s food systems. One of the impactful projects highlighted during the event will be the Developing Inclusive Grain Value Chains in #Nigeria (DIGVCN).
This project, a collaboration between IDH, Nestlé, and TechnoServe, has significantly improved the livelihoods of over 22,000 smallholder farmers by providing essential training, facilitating access to finance, and enhancing market opportunities.
With achievements like €7.7 million in input credit, the creation of over 262,000 jobs, and the widespread adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, the project has made strides in strengthening the grain value chain and fostering economic growth.
The Forum will offer an opportunity to delve into these successes, exploring how similar approaches can be scaled and adapted across different regions to build a more resilient and inclusive food system throughout Africa.

We join the world on this #worldfoodday to champion for the #righttofood
While African in the recent years have seen a rise in the innovative approaches and scientific research combined with traditional approach to agriculture in the aim of solving hunger, it is still not enough, as explained by World Economic Forum .
Despite Africa resourcefulness in terms of year-round favourable climate, vast tracts of unused lands, and readily available human resource, the continent still imports $55 billion worth of food annually. Worse, if the innovation in Agriculture is not enhanced further, the value is expected to double by the year 2030 —the deadline for the United Nations Sustainable Develooment Goals.
On this #worldfoodday, as an organization of young Agricultural, Environmental, soil, and water Engineers in Africa, we reflect on the urgent need to combat hunger and build sustainable food systems across Africa through science-based agriculture. We appreciate the effort and role played by international organizations (United Nations, FAO, The World Bank, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), among many others) and non-profit organizations in pushing for sustainable Agriculture and food systems in the continent.
We at Kola & Manyala Agricultural Engineering Group (KMAEG) believe that with the right blend of science-based Agriculture, innovation, and collaboration, we can empower farmers, improve productivity, and reduce food insecurity. We are committed as young Engineers in the Agriculture, soil, and water field to play our part by promoting sustainable practices, supporting smallholders, and partnering with governments and organizations to create a food secure Africa.
Together, we can transform Agriculture, fight hunger, and nourish the future continent.
Attached is a short 1 min video.
One of the key aspects of Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa is fostering collaborations among stakeholders in Agricultural Value chains. A major part of this process is using evidence, data and learnings from experts and researchers such as those from our local institutions, and experiences and lessons from the private sectors.
Yesterday, I was privileged to meet Prof. Catherine And Dr. Teresiah Ng'ang'a in the UoN for in-depth discussions of how Africa will be food secure and meet its food demands amidst a rapidly growing population.
In our discussions, we resolved to explore on the existing avenues to encourage joint innovations amongst different players in the agriculture sector and its sub sectors. Future must be agriculture!!
It was a wonderful and inspiring event, especially the African round-table with high ranking personalities indicating different views of the current situation about the latest developments and possible improvement for the agriculture industry in African countries,
In our opinion - which was shared by several participants - a very important subject is the fact that too much food is spoil directly after the harvest because of insufficient and ineffective cooling systems. It does not really help to improve the productivity if 40% of the products are lost, spoiled or wasted.
Therefore it makes sense to have a look at high-efficient cold chaine systems preferably with ZERO-CARBO Emission.
One optimised concept - The Perfect Cold Chain - alone can save appr. 80.000 tons of food per year.
Worthwhile to think about it !

Sulma Whole Foods is proudly represented by our CEO, Aisha Chepngetich at the #AfricaFoodSystems (AFS) Forum 2024 in Kigali, Rwanda. This year's forum, themed "Innovate, Accelerate, and Scale: Delivering Food Systems Transformation in a Different Digital and Climate Era," focuses on addressing the rapidly growing food demand in Africa, which is increasing by an average of 3% annually—mirroring the continent's population growth.
While Africa is endowed with abundant land, natural resources, and biodiversity that are crucial for agriculture, the continent still faces challenges in meeting this demand. Hailemariam Desalegn, AFS Board Chair, aptly asks, "Do we pause and ponder what it takes for food to arrive on our plates?" highlighting the essential role of smallholder farmers in our food systems.
At AFS Forum 2024, the focus is on strengthening Africa’s food systems. We look forward to engaging in discussions on how smallholder farmers, the private sector, policymakers, and government agencies can work together to enhance agriculture across the continent.
