In a landscape dominated by giants like SpaceX, it's inspiring to see small launch vehicle companies creating their unique offerings. At the recent World Space Business Week, several European startups presented exciting developments that highlight their commitment to flexibility and niche market solutions: 🚀 Orbex (UK) aims for flexibility with its Prime vehicle, targeting a test launch in 2025. 🚀 Latitude (France) is on track for its Zephyr vehicle's initial test launch by late 2025. 🚀 Sirius Space Services (France) is developing a series of small launchers, with the Sirius 1 set for a mid-2026 test flight. These companies are confident in their ability to meet global demand, despite the challenges of frequent launches needed for sustainability. The cooling system cost for part of the Falcon 9 was more than $3 million, but he thought he could use the house air conditioning systems that cost $6,000 and modify the pumps so that they could work on a rocket.   The cranes to lift the Falcon 9 were to cost $2 million but, by having changed the safety regulations imposed by the Air Force, he managed to get them for $300,000.   The latches used by NASA on the Space Station cost $1,500 each but, together with a SpaceX engineer, he modified a latch used in a public toilet to create a locking mechanism for $30.   And for rocket valves, he decided to buy car valves, which cost 30 times less than those offered by companies specializing in aeronautical components.   These are just some of the actions taken by Elon Musk to reduce the cost of sending rockets into space via his private company, SpaceX.   The entrepreneur often thinks differently from the employee, striving to achieve equal or higher product quality at a lower or equal cost. After all, the entrepreneur is responsible for the company's financial performance. However, the satisfaction from significant cost savings, for both the employer and the employee, is priceless. I'm speaking as someone who did "cat sitting" in Silicon Valley during the three months we were accelerated by Plug and Play, and we paid $3,000 in rent for those three months, instead of the usual $3,000 a month for an average rent in San Francisco. Despite stiff competition from SpaceX rideshare services and some high-profile failures, ventures are still pursuing small launch vehicles that they argue can fill niches in the market. Several companies presented updates on the development of small launch vehicles at World Space Business Week Sept. 18, arguing they can deliver satellites when and where customers want rather than waiting for the next available rideshare launch from SpaceX. “We offer flexibility,” said Miguel Bello Mora, executive chairman of Orbex, a small launch vehicle developer based in the United Kingdom. “We can’t compete on price per kilo.” Orbex is developing the Prime launch vehicle that will launch from Sutherland Spaceport in northern Scotland. An initial test launch is scheduled for the summer of 2025, with commercial launches beginning in 2026. Other companies in Europe are pressing ahead with first launches of new small vehicles. Stanislas Maximin, chief executive of French startup Latitude, said the company plans to have its Zephyr vehicle ready for an initial test launch by the end of 2025. https://lnkd.in/e--m3XpH

A space rocket that can take off and land like an aeroplane: That is the idea being pursued by the Bremen-based start-up POLARIS Spaceplanes. Small test models are already flying, take off is due in 2028. The invention could revolutionise the market, as the spacecraft can be reused up to 200 times - and can take off into space from any airport. The start-up company, located in the industrial estate near the Bremer Kreuz motorway junction, uses two different types of engine for its space vehicle. During take-off, it is the turbine engines that are used. When the vehicle is flying, the "Aerospike Engines" (rocket engines) are ignited to provide the propulsion needed for supersonic flight. These engines are the company's own development, made in Bremen. "The most important question about any location is: where do I get the staff? And Bremen is, after all, one of the largest aviation and aerospace cities", sys Alexander Kopp when asked, why he moved his startup to Bremen. The Federal State of Bremen has the largest number of people involved in aviation and aerospace in Germany, per head of populatio and is home to more than 140 companies and twenty institutes that are involved in this sector. Klopp also remarked that Bremen's proximity to the coast is a great advantage. His colleagues regularly travel to Peenemünde on the island of Usedom because the airspace over the sea can be "cordoned off" for test flights.
