At Simplify Orthotics, before developing our own software for creating orthotics, we utilised free or low-cost solutions like Autodesk’s MeshMixer instead of spending a fortune on industry CAD packages. Recently, a client asked for an easy method to apply build-ups on bony prominences. Just thought I’d share one of the techniques we used, hoping it helps others facing the same challenge. Bringing our multi-axis game to the next level! Full simultaneous machining unlocks some pretty crazy tool paths. This particular tool path was programmed using Autodesk Fusion 360. Simultaneous machining allows us to machine more organic, complex parts that would otherwise not be possible with traditional 3-axis machining. The part was done in one operation, cannot beat putting a block of material in the machine and removing a completed part held on with just a few, small tabs. This specific tool path was used to cut the part out upon completion. In a major coup for Hexagon AB, the Swedish software giant has purchased all Geomagic assets from 3D Systems Corporation for $123 million.
