Today I was part of the employers delegation in the #Horeca EU sectoral social dialogue plenary were among others an exchange took place with the🇪🇺European Labour Authority on its latest report 📄 on the horeca sector. A discussion also took place on several good initiatives by the horeca social partners this year including the joint-declaration on how to decrease skills and labour shortages as well as negotiations on the Multi-sectoral Social Partners Guidelines to Prevent and Tackle Third-Party Violence and Harassment related to Work. The hotel industry is constantly changing and adapting to suit customer and worker needs but after 2020, this change was forced to happen at a different pace. During 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had a severe impact on the hospitality industry, hotel occupancy rates plummeted, and many hotels faced financial strain due to reduced bookings and travel restrictions. Employees were understandably concerned about their livelihoods and now they are demanding fair wages, improved working conditions, and job stability. This push for employee fairness is essential for the well-being of those who contribute to the industry. This past week, hospitality industry workers let their voices be heard by participating in huge rallies and protests to make their demands clear “Thousands of unionized hotel workers participated in May Day rallies across the U.S. and Canada on May 1st.
