On this #WorldChildrensDay2024, under the theme#ListenToTheFuture, we must confront the uncomfortable truth about our justice system and its impact on children. Are we truly listening to the future when we allow a system to perpetuate cycles of trauma and hardship? The incarceration of mothers—often for acts of survival or self-defence against relentless abuse—raises critical questions about our commitment to the best interests of the child. Each time a mother is taken away, we are not just severing a vital bond; we are sentencing her children to a future marked by stigma, instability, and emotional turmoil. As we advocate for a world that listens to children and prioritises their well-being, we must confront the systemic flaws that perpetuate their suffering. We must stand together to demand justice that is not only equitable but also sensitive to the realities faced by families. Let us be the voices for those who cannot speak, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive, regardless of their circumstances. On this #WorldChildrensDay2024, let us commit to actively listening to the future—because their voices today will shape the world we all share tomorrow. A thought-provoking article on this issue is available at this link: https://lnkd.in/dWTdKmkE Join us as we continue our fight for the protection of mothers and their children during and post-incarceration by donating to our cause: https://lnkd.in/d7Kq-AyG #Decrminisalisepettyoffences #listentothefuture #childrensrights #Worldchildrensday2024

Dear network, I am excited to share that I will be running a 10km race to support Women’s Aid, a charity dedicated to ending domestic abuse against women and children. Why This Cause Matters Domestic abuse remains a critical issue, affecting 1 in 4 women in their lifetime. Women’s Aid has been at the forefront of providing life-saving services for over 50 years, including: • Safe accommodation for those escaping abuse. • Confidential helplines offering advice and support. • Specialist services to help survivors rebuild their lives. • Awareness campaigns to educate communities. • Advocacy for stronger legal protections. How You Can Help Your support can make a significant impact. For instance, a £10 donation can connect a survivor to a support worker via Women’s Aid’s Live Chat service. If you would like to contribute or learn more, please visit my JustGiving page: https://lnkd.in/eV3y4SDu Thank you for your support in creating a safer future for women and children. #WomensAid #DomesticAbuseAwareness #SupportSurvivors #CharityRun #Empowerment

It was a Friday afternoon when I almost became "one of those women". 👇🏽 You know, the type of woman who gets herself killed by her partner. What "type" of woman does this happen to? The uneducated? The naive? The disadvantaged? The type who will "get herself" into trouble, get involved with a bad apple when she should know better? Whether you look at "those women" with pity, or apathy, or despair, or suspicion (because in the words of my ex's mother "well if it was so bad, why didn't you leave earlier?") the truth is that you probably know a woman who is being abused at home. And she / they could be doing a wonderful job of hiding it, or downplaying it, just as I was. I used to think "I would never let that happen to me". And yet, as an educated, privileged, professional woman working in health and wellbeing, I found myself one Friday afternoon being shoved forcefully against a wooden surface by my partner, concussed and then dragged into another room where the assault continued. If you don't think this kind of share belongs on LinkedIn as a professional platform, I need to call you out on that. Domestic violence has a profound impact on our workplaces and we need to address it. Unfortunately many of us who have lived experience of DV don't talk about it, in large part because of the shame we feel, and the shame that is heaped upon us. For example, another victim-shaming comment from my abuser's mother was "what a disgusting waste of police resources to have them babysit you", when I said the police had offered to accompany me to collect my belongings if I wasn't able to have clear and safe access to the house I had fled. Shutting me down and shutting me up are strategies that my ex and his family tried to use to deflect blame and accountability and avoid their own shame. But after 25 domestic homicides in Australia this year, I refuse to stay quiet anymore. This is why TEACH Services is my charity of choice and why we have co-developed the WellSafe Workshop (https://lnkd.in/g6m2AiuA) for South Australia. It's essential that conversations about #violenceprevention, #harmprevention, #emotionalviolence, #psychosocialhazards and #coercivecontrol are amplified in workplaces, and that messages about #mentalfitness and #psychologicalsafety are carried home.
Vale Molly Ticehurst, the 25th victim of domestic violence this year. Another woman loses her life, another family grieves, another father without a daughter, another little boy without his mother and his own story of domestic violence for the rest of his life. What can you do about it? · You can write to your MP asking for laws to change. · You can register for our WellSafe program and get your workplace educated. https://lnkd.in/gt-YUyka · You can call out inappropriate comments to and about women. · You can raise concerns about changes in a woman’s behaviour. · You can donate so we can continue this work for you. https://lnkd.in/gEWtjUwH · You can invest with us to create safe accommodation for people and pets. Be outraged, be sad, but most importantly act. #ithastostop #domesticviolence #WellSafe #TEACHServices #mentalfitnessmovement #donatenow #invest #community

"The Ripple Effect of Financial Abuse on Young Lives" "Child Financial Abuse at its core involves the inappropriate use of a child’s identity or assets for personal gain. Financial Abuse is a form of mistreatment often overshadowed by its physical and emotional counterparts, which wields a silent yet devastating impact on children. It is a manipulation of economic resources to exert control, and when children are the victims, the consequences can reverberate throughout their lives." This week on the Norm Therapy blog, we discuss Child Financial Abuse and the long-term impacts it can have on children. How can we prevent Child Financial Abuse?
