Happy to share with you a wonderful interview I had with MT/Sprout,a leading business (publication) platform in the Netherlands, as part of my promotional tour in the Netherlands for the Dutch translation of Red Flags Green Flags! During the interview we spoke about today’s Zeitgeist at work and how especially younger generations connect to and engage in the workplace. Here are some key take aways from the article: 🚩 it’s a red flag when you say to employees nowadays “this company is your family” 🚩 its a red flag if you expect younger generations to be fully invested in their work. Younger generations have different priorities about work and often find it hard to deal with difficult work situations. They need balance and gradual exposure to lean into things. 🚩 it’s a red flag if you as a Gen X or early Millennial evaluate GenZ based on the values and expectations that have driven your career goals the past 20 years. 🚩 it’s a red flag if you don’t prioritize mental emotional social and financial well-being at work. The world has become so uncertain nowadays that all generations are seeking to belong to a tribe that helps them feel safe connected and proud. NOTE: red doesn’t mean run, rather red in my book means to put on the breaks and take time to evaluate the situation and maybe have a conversation with people to know what really drives and concerns them! RED stands for: Reflect Engage Decide! Though Red Flags Green Flags isn’t a management book at heart it does cover 6 chapters about work relationships and provides the reader insights to the mind of (GenZ) employees and how they feel about work nowadays! A book managers and leaders should add and prioritize on their reading list if they are serious about attracting and retaining their talent in today’s world! Thank you MT/Sprout for such a wonderful interview and beautiful editorial! Was a great experience! Read the article here (Dutch): https://lnkd.in/dUYM5Uy5

It is important to know how employees perceive their jobs. Milena Nikolova (Milena N.) believes that our motivations for working explain much of our work behaviour. The Professor of Economics of Wellbeing distinguishes three different types of work motivations: as a tool to earn money, as a step in your career, or as something that provides a sense of purpose. This tripartite division matters, as Nikolova found out. ‘I was shocked to discover that the meaning we attribute to our work is an important determining factor.' This classification explains approximately 40% of the differences in the effort we put in the workplace, or in our search for a new job. ‘Recognizing different work motivations can help employees become aware of what makes them happy.’ Read the complete interview with Milena Nikolova on UG's website: https://lnkd.in/eWC5pNN5 #WorkMotivation #Career #Purpose #WorkplaceBehaviour

As a manager, I see every day how important it is to create an authentic, meaningful, and innovative work environment. In a time of rapid change, our industry faces many challenges and opportunities. Generation Z brings fresh perspectives and a passion for change to our teams, which is invaluable for the transformation of our industry. The automotive industry is currently at a turning point. This makes it important to give young, motivated people the opportunity to develop their creative drive. In my work at Amaneos, I have met many career starters who are indispensable for the innovation and development of the company. Creating the conditions in which these young talents can contribute to the transformation of our industry fills me with pride and great joy. However, it is crucial to acknowledge the challenges and prejudices Gen Z faces in the workplace. Common misconceptions include viewing them as entitled or overly dependent on technology. Additionally, their preference for flexible work arrangements and a strong work-life balance can sometimes be misinterpreted as a lack of commitment. An article from WirtschaftsWoche provides valuable insights on how to successfully collaborate with Gen Z (German only) and how to integrate the young generation of employees into the existing workforce: Gen Z: https://lnkd.in/dbq-yzFm 👩💻 Flexibility and Work-Life Balance: Gen Z values flexible work models and a balanced work-life relationship. 💡 Continuous Learning and Development Opportunities: Continuous learning and mentorship should be integral parts of our corporate culture. 🤳 Modern Work Environments: Investments in up-to-date tools and digital infrastructure are necessary. We must understand and meet the expectations of this generation. Gen Z can provide valuable new impetus in a changing industry. At the same time, experienced employees should never be lost sight of. They are the cornerstone on which our work is based. Let’s develop innovative solutions together to shape the future of the automotive industry. #AutomotiveIndustry #GenerationZ #Innovation #Sustainability #Leadership #ShapingTheFuture

𝐌𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐒 – 𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐒 (Read the German version in a seperate post on my profile) 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭: You may have come across the term "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion" before. This approach aims to create conditions within an organization to promote fair treatment and unrestricted participation of all individuals. It particularly focuses on marginalized persons – those who are underrepresented in companies, face additional challenges, and experience discrimination. For my master's thesis, I want to speak with these individuals – perhaps with you. 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐈’𝐦 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫: If YOU experience individual workplace challenges related to aspects of your identity, such as belonging to BIPOC communities, sexuality, gender identity, disability, origin, faith, or other aspects, I would like to learn more about you and your experiences through an interview. During this interview, I will ask you some questions about the role one (or multiple) of these aspects play in your daily work life and how, from your perspective, conditions for fair treatment and unrestricted participation in the company can change as a result. Ideally, you have been employed at the same company within Germany for at least two years with a weekly working time of at least 20 hours. 𝐅𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: This master's thesis is part of the research project "Allyship in the Workplace Context" at the Chair of Strategic Leadership and Sustainability Management at Technische Universität Berlin: https://lnkd.in/ePhzUJR4 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭: If you can and would like to contribute your personal experiences to this research project, I would greatly appreciate your message. FYI today Dutch media trade magazine Villamedia published an interview based on my forthcoming book on Well-Being and Creative Careers, focusing on the elements of work (in the media) that make people happy, while also explaining why so many get sick on the job: a lack of reciprocity, unusually heavy workloads, and widespread organizational injustice. In the book, I apply these three insights (based on research in the field of occupational medicine) to the data from surveys and other self-reported research between 2014-2024 among people in creative roles in six media professions: journalism, advertising/marketing/PR, film/cinema and TV, digital games, music/recording/performance, and social media/online content creation. Across all these fields, the research paints a consistent picture of working conditions negatively impacting people's well-being, while many of these media professionals simultaneously state to be happy at work. It is this discrepancy between passion and disenchantment, between institutional betrayal and intrinsic motivation, between getting paid to do what you love and being treated like 'something that costs money' that goes at the heart of what working in the media is like for many. Will share more about this as I go along, and please feel free to share your observations - with deep appreciation to all who have already responded to earlier updates on this platform!

The podcast itself is in Dutch, but the insights are universal. Context and purpose matters… always!
