Research finds 2.6million UK children are facing a bleak festive season ❗️ As millions get set to celebrate Christmas, research finds around a third of children aged 8 to 18 fear that a friend or classmate won’t get any presents (33%) or celebrate Christmas (32%) because their family can’t afford it. It found nearly one in five (18%) UK children - 2.6 million - are materially deprived, meaning their families can’t afford the basic items and activities that the Government considers essential to a happy and healthy childhood. Of these, more than half (58%), 1.5 million, are under 10 years old. If we have the means, even small actions can make a big difference. This Christmas remember to donate 🩵

Adults can get squirrely when it comes to talking about money. We have old scripts - maybe it was taboo or bragging or common to talk about money. This is a post about money talk - especially when it comes to charitable giving. My parents talked to my siblings and I about their giving growing up. I can remember, at the end of the year, them researching and writing checks, making sure they gave at least 10% away (which was their goal). It left a mark on me - inspiring me to give early on, even (especially) when it felt like a stretch. For the last few years, we've invited our children to each choose an organization for our family to support. Luke and I set aside a portion of our giving for them to steward. They do some end-of-year research/reflecting - And I love seeing what connects with each of their spirits - One child gave to the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons, equipping emerging physicians across the continent with the tools and training to practice close to home. Another chose Riley Children's Health, which is a perennial favorite in our household (thanks for saving my son's life!) The third chose the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, targeting their funds to those displaced in the ruins of Gaza. And the last chose Heifer International, designating funds for female entrepreneurs. So much on this platform is about growth and impact and profit... And I hope that you each had a bang-up year. As a season of conspicuous consumption ramps up, this is a good time to reflect on how to give back. For those of you with young people in your life, consider this a nudge to invite them into generosity.
