In their recent T&D World article, Juan Macias (Duke Energy – Lead IT Architect, Cellular Enterprise) and Jeff Livingston (Salt River Project – Senior Manager, Telecom) emphasize the value of private LTE (PLTE) networks for enabling resilient, modernized grids. Per the article, utility organizations that are weighing grid upgrades to facilitate progress should consider a robust communications infrastructure as a top priority. Importantly, the authors note that “a hybrid PLTE or combined NB-IoT and mesh network might be necessary” to address complex connectivity needs since, “the size of the utility, as well as the specific needs and locations of devices, will dictate the appropriate network.” This advice aligns closely with Select Spectrum’s message to utilities: carefully evaluate your available options and acquire rights to the spectrum band or bands that best advance your organization’s unique objectives and requirements.
