The Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE) has started preparing for the 2024 municipal elections by conducting four minicamps across all of Lebanon. I had the opportunity to contribute to the minicamps by conducting four training sessions on media monitoring during the election campaign period. These discussions aimed to assist LADE's potential long-term observers in identifying and documenting undemocratic and/or illegal practices by candidates to municipal elections. Such practices include clientelism, the use of public facilities and abuse of influence for electoral gain, hate speech, and misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. During the ongoing war on the south, coupled with the economic collapse, municipalities should play a crucial role in managing these crises to alleviate the consequences inflicted on people. It is essential for Lebanese authorities to conduct municipal elections this time, following two illegal and undemocratic postponements in 2022 and 2023.

The Election the World is Not Watching Excited to share my insights on Somaliland's upcoming combined Presidential and Political Associations elections, set for November 13, 2024. This landmark event marks the first time these two pivotal elections will be held simultaneously, a significant milestone in Somaliland's democratic journey. The paper delves into Somaliland's unique political system, which limits national parties to three and undergoes a decennial renewal process. It also highlights the introduction of advanced biometric voter registration technology, positioning Somaliland as a leader in electoral innovation. Despite lacking international recognition, Somaliland continues to stand out for its political stability and democratic progress, especially when compared to other African nations. The elections could play a crucial role in its ongoing quest for international recognition and serve as a benchmark for democratic development in the region. This is a powerful example of resilience and innovation in governance that deserves global attention. SERP-P NEW PUBLICATION: Enabling PWD Participation in Elections: The Case for the Philippines Published by the La Salle Institute of Governance, this policy brief examines current policies on persons voting in the Philippines with the successful passage of Republic Act No. 10366, otherwise known as the Accessible Polling Places Act of 2013. During the 2022 elections, PWD voters had been disenfranchised because election precincts lacked access and volunteers to assist them. The registration process was also cumbersome, leading to PWDs not registering as such and missing out on services dedicated to them, particularly the use of accessible polling places. Thus, this paper argues for a significant review and for the Commission on Elections to improve its implementation of the system. It was recommended that the government and civil society should continuously support these initiatives. Access the full study here: https://lnkd.in/g9KNPyHi #PWD #Voters #PhilippineElection

❓ How can constitutional rights of those excluded from voting be protected? Against the backdrop of South Africa's seventh democratic elections, and on the country's 30th anniversary of democracy, a few questions about the right to vote arise. 💡 Should the right to vote be extended beyond citizenry? 💡 If the current status quo were to be maintained, how would the rights of those excluded from voting be protected? Should you be interested in unpacking the above and more, please RSVP for the SAIFAC conference taking place at the University of Johannesburg next week!
