South African Family Practice (SAFP) is now included in SciELO SA – yet another DHET-approved index to which SAFP is now added. SciELO SA, a prestigious index, forms part of the SciELO Network, and is administered and maintained by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf). SciELO SA has a strict set of inclusion criteria to which all journals indexed in it must adhere; only once a journal meets these criteria can it be included in this index. This reflects the quality of the researchers who contribute to SAFP as well as the reviewers that review their submissions – and, by extension, the works that get published in SAFP. Being included in this world-renowned index thus represents yet another step towards making the footprint of SAFP and the works published in it truly global, while staying relevant to the journal’s home and the people it serves. The knowledge disseminated through SAFP is even more visible and accessible now that it is included on this respected platform. And, in line with its open-access publishing model, new content of SAFP will be available directly on SciELO SA in HTML and PDF formats. We are pleased to invite you to submit your manuscript to the SAFP. This could allow your work to gain international exposure upon consideration for publication.

IRSPM 2024 Conference in Tampere is in full swing. I am grateful that I could present ongoing research on citizen participation in regional governance (as “action by citizens directed toward influencing or supporting governance outcomes” in the context of regional policy and an ongoing place branding processes with Erik Hans Klijn Jasper Eshuis and Maria Belén Yanotti. We explored network interaction variables (interactions with others in the network and trust in other in the network) with sociological and psychological literature on participation (power or capacity to influence outcomes in the network) and amotional aspects (attachment to place). Some key learnings: ✔ Interactions with others in the network matter, as they increase participation (significant in both cases) ✔ Trust in others in thr network matters (only in the Australian context) ✔ BUT, place attachment (affective, emotional connection) matters in some regions (Spanish case). ✔ The context of regions matters (how does social capital form in those regions; history of public participation). The thirty-fifth of the weekly series of posts about “the book” (The Emerald Handbook of Research Management and Administration Around the World) The Profession of Research Management and Administration in South Africa by Les Labuschagne https://lnkd.in/eZm2NK7A This final African chapter in the Countries section covers RMA in South Africa. ChatGPT summary of the chapter: The South African research ecosystem has evolved significantly since the end of Apartheid in 1994. Key reforms include the establishment of a National System of Innovation (NSI) and the restructuring of higher education, marked by the 1997 Higher Education Act and subsequent institutional mergers. The system now includes 26 public universities, with research activities driven primarily by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI). Research output is measured through publication output units (POUs), with funding tied to DHET-approved journals. While progress has been made in inclusivity and capacity building, challenges remain, including the need for increased doctoral qualifications and professionalization of research management. You can of course read the whole book, chapter by chapter, online for free. https://lnkd.in/dNdEYsRj Or if you are desperate to own a hardcopy then use code EME30 at the checkout at Emerald Books: https://lnkd.in/erGU-4tS International Network of Research Management Societies NCURA: National Council of University Research Administrators Society of Research Administrators International Australasian Research Management Society (ARMS) Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA) BRAMA Brazil - Associação Brasileira de Gestão e Administração de Pesquisa Científica COREMA MYRMA ARMA UK (Association of Research Managers and Administrators) EARMA Canadian Association of Research Administrators ARMA - NL #RMA #BookAnnouncement #OpenAccess #ResearchAdministration #ResearchManagement #Book #Research #ResearchSupport #Profession

Sustainability is not just a buzzword; it is the focus even at the higher education level. Hence, this collaboration with my colleagues on fostering a sustainable approach to doctoral studies. It was our first poster presentation, and it was a learning curve for us too. Looking forward to more opportunities for collaborations for sustainability. #sustainability #lifelonglearning #sdgs
I am thankful for this oppurtunity to collaborate with fellow International PhD candidates Karizza Bravo-Sotelo Shafinur Nahar Silas Emovwodo about fostering a sustainable approach to doctoral studies. We got to present this at the International Conference organised by C3L, UBD.

Dear networks, It is for me, an honor and pride to have been selected by the African Reproducibility Network (AREN) and to be part of the first cohort of participants in training to be invested with a mission, that of representing AREN as Local Network Lead at my university in Benin. AREN aims to promote open science which essentially works to break down the barriers to knowledge and make science a public good in an approach of transparency, accessibility, reproducibility, and broad collaboration in the research process. The mission would be to ensure that the notions of open science and open access are grasped by the scientific community and take root in practices. Specifically, the overcoming challenges are to : - promoting awareness and education by organizing training and workshops; Incorporate Open Science in Curricula ; - Establishing and Strengthening Networks by creating Local Open Science Groups and forming Regional Consortia - Fostering collaboration and partnerships which means Partner with International Networks; participating in Global OS Events and Engage Stakeholders and public - Invest in Infrastructure and Technical Support by investing in Open Infrastructure (e.g. Repositories) and Standardize Data Practices
We are thrilled to announce that the Level 1 training for our first cohort of Local Network Leads started in April with 71 trainees from 20 African countries and over 60 institutions. They bring a wealth of experience from various professional roles. 🎓 Under the guidance of expert trainers Susann Auer and Nele Haelterman (Reproducibility for Everyone), Jonny Coates and Clare F. Stone (ASAPbio), Vanessa Fairhurst and Daniela Saderi, Ph.D. (PREreview), Rania Baleela, Esther Plomp, Bosun Obileye, and Batool Almarzouq (Open Science Community Saudi Arabia) our trainees will delve into topics such as Reproducibility, Open Access, Preprints, Open Peer Review, Open Repositories, Open Data, and more. 🚀 The six-month training will equip these leaders with the necessary skills to champion the adoption of open science practices within their institutions and research communities. We are committed to supporting each trainee through a rigorous educational journey that enhances their capabilities and fosters a collaborative network of open science practitioners and advocates across the continent. 🌍 Join us in celebrating this transformative program that marks a significant milestone in our journey to promote open science practices across Africa. We are grateful to our supporters, the Open Research Funders Group (ORFG), for making this possible through the Open Scholarship Seed Award Program. Stay tuned for updates on their progress and the impact of their work. Let's make science open and accessible to all! #AREN #OpenScience #Research #Innovation #Education #Africa

We should focus on doing more and more research in Namibia that is tailor-made to improve our education system in the country. It is high time that institutions of high learning begin to solicit research presentations from other scholars outside their institution. Some of these scholars might have done, or are doing research which are educational transformative by nature and can change the education landscape in the country. Waiting for in-house lectures, and educational experts to produce research, whilst not giving chances to others outside does not strengthen one's institution in research, let alone ranking internationally. Thus calls for research should be outstretched to other scholars and researchers too.
