This morning, at the invitation of my publisher, St. Petersburg Press, I had the honor and pleasure of presenting an author marketing workshop for new and aspiring authors. Three years ago when Accidental First Lady was published, I did nothing before publication day to promote my book. I honestly was worried about drawing attention to Rick's administration and creating a distraction from his work. That was wrong, and I've learned. In fact, 3 years post-publishing, I'm still attending occasional events and giving interviews. Author marketing is important, and the sooner aspiring authors begin to become confident and learn how to effectively promote themselves and their books, the better. There are some facts about publishing that all authors should know. This list can help you adjust your marketing strategy (and expectations) accordingly. -On average, 1-5% of your EXISTING audience will order your book within the first few weeks/months -You can (and should) actually start implementing some marketing strategy while writing your book -While self-publishing offers flexibility, rushing the process can ultimately have a negative impact on your success -If you’re running Amazon ads your daily budget shouldn’t be less than $30/day (but PS, you can set monthly spend caps!) -If you truly want to grow your presence on social media, you need to be consistent (first and foremost) but also likely increase your frequency -You can start testing Facebook ads for a little as $1-5/day (this gives you a sample size to discover what your audience resonates with) -The largest % of self-published fiction authors who are making a living income off of publishing have published 10+, 20+ books (so be careful who you compare yourself to) -THERE IS NO SINGLE RIGHT WAY TO PUBLISH OR PROMOTE A BOOK Are any of these facts new to you? In my 9+ years experience in publishing, THIS is the absolute worst marketing strategy 👇🏼 And a lot of authors do it. Nothing. They spend time, energy, and often money on writing a book they are truly proud of, and then when it comes time to promote it they sit back and wait for readers to find them. But that strategy always leaves authors feeling disappointed and discouraged. Don’t let this be you! If you’re writing a book—or even if you’ve already written a book—set aside 30 minutes this week to evaluate your marketing strategy. Here’s what you can do with this time: -Look over your current marketing plan if you have one and start building implementation into your schedule for next week -Find a couple of blogs or articles about book marketing and see what ideas inspire you -Check out social media pages and/or websites of other authors in your genre to see what they are doing to promote their books -Watch tutorial videos or a video course on book marketing strategies Whatever you do, don’t let it be “nothing.” And if you need guidance, keep following me here and join my free newsletter! Today officially marks 4 months before my book release on December 17th! What usually happens during this time in the book publishing process? - I turned in my last round of edits (technically last month). Every major publisher is different but there were four rounds of edits done between me and the publishing editors and then a proofreading round. Transparently, I don't think I could've done ONE more round 😂 . I was tired of re-reading my words, but grateful to have other eyes pick up what I had become accustomed to see. - I approved final book cover edits this past week. Saw the advanced reading copy reviews on the cover + the author's photo placed and ready for final print. Probably the most exciting thing that's making it feel real. - Intensive marketing and book launch strategy kicked off. Working out the marketing and book launch timeline and strategy, I realized that the 6-week pre-sale mark is exactly on election day. Interesting timing! But definitely think the resources of using the breath to calm one's nervous system will be a useful tool that's top of mind on Nov. 5th. Entering an intensive work sprint both for the book and for the business but excited for all this momentum! P.S. Was a hard choice between all of the options but finally landed on the author's photo below (photo credit: Gerald Carter). I wanted it to feel warm and approachable like my work, yet authoritative. Hopefully we landed it!

How to write better marketing copy: 1. Study 1 ad everyday. 2. Write every morning. 3. Read a book about marketing. 4. Study psychology & persuasion books 5. Create small offers and run ads to them 6. Be vigilant. Study human reactions to real-life experiences. 7. Don't stop writing.

Many authors dream of publishing a book but shy away from marketing it. Why? Here are some key reasons: 😨 Fear of Self-Promotion Authors often feel uncomfortable "selling" themselves or their work. They may equate marketing with manipulation or dishonesty, wanting to avoid coming across as pushy. 🧐 Focus on Craft Some writers believe their job ends with writing, preferring to stay in their creative zone rather than tackle the business side[1]. They'd rather invest time in honing their skills and producing more work. 😔 Lack of Knowledge Marketing can be overwhelming for authors who lack the experience. The learning curve seems steep, leading to analysis paralysis. 😣 Misplaced Expectations Authors may assume publishers will handle all marketing, not realizing the limited resources most publishers allocate to individual titles. 🤓 Building Slowly Some authors take a long-term view, focusing on writing multiple books and gradually building an audience through organic growth rather than aggressive promotion. While all of these reasons are understandable, avoiding marketing altogether is rarely advisable.
