Net Zero 1.   An abrupt global divestment from fossil fuel as an energy source would lead to a disastrous development impacts in several countries? 2. Is it true that developing countries in Africa, Asia & Latin America becoming ‘Involuntary Sacrificial Lamb for Net Zero’? In 1912, the Rodney and Otamatea Times published an article warning that coal consumption was affecting the climate. Over a century later, the science is clear: burning fossil fuels releases billions of tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere, causing global temperatures to rise. Yet here we are, decades into the climate crisis, still debating, innovating too slowly, and facing consequences like extreme weather, rising seas, and disrupted ecosystems. It’s time to rethink how we approach this challenge. The solutions must be bold, innovative, and systemic. Here are some ideas: 1️⃣ Transitioning to Renewable Energy: Scaling up solar, wind, and other renewable technologies is critical. Governments and industries must work together to make clean energy accessible and affordable globally. 2️⃣ Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS): Investing in technologies that capture CO₂ from the atmosphere or industrial processes can help mitigate emissions while transitioning to sustainable systems. 3️⃣ Circular Economy: Redesigning supply chains to reduce waste, recycle materials, and use resources more efficiently. 4️⃣ Nature-Based Solutions: Reforestation, mangrove restoration, and other ecological strategies can act as carbon sinks while enhancing biodiversity. 5️⃣ Energy Efficiency: Retrofitting buildings, adopting smart grids, and encouraging energy-efficient technologies reduce unnecessary consumption. 6️⃣ Behavioral Changes: Encouraging shifts in consumption patterns, from dietary changes to energy usage, can collectively make a significant difference. The warning signs were there 109 years ago, but the time to act is now. Let’s commit to innovation, collaboration, and action to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. #BigIdeas2025

🌱Achieving net zero is more than just a goal—it's a necessity. But what does a net zero world realistically look like? A recent paper, which Alex Fuerst from our team has reviewed, offers some fascinating insights based on 39 years of weather data to optimise energy mix and battery storage: ➡Significant overproduction of energy is necessary. ➡A substantial amount of energy storage is required. ➡The geographical size of the grid plays a critical role. While the study has its limitations—such as not modelling interconnected grids in the EU or multiple non-connected grids in Australia—it highlights that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Geography is just as crucial as technology in determining reliability. This research is crucial for anyone involved in energy planning and policy making, providing a clearer picture of the challenges and requirements on our path to net zero. https://lnkd.in/gi7CU65c

Great discussion at #WEF25 in Davos on Industrial Decarbonization as a Growth Strategy with compelling cases in which digitalization and sustainability are integrated to optimize energy use, minimize waste and reduce costs to drive greater profitability, reduced emissions and better outcomes for workers, customers and the planet. A few highlights: - At least 80% of industrial emissions by companies are in their supply chains (scope 3) so significant focus on suppliers. Positive engagement with Tier 1s but transparency challenges with other tiers. - There is significant momentum toward the clean energy transition in the US that won’t be derailed. Case in point - Kentucky receiving close to $14 billion of new investment. -  Developing countries and the Global South broadly can benefit from new clean energy technologies that can lower energy costs and allow for leapfrogging older technologies; goal is to make technology more accessible and affordable, particularly in regions where renewable energy and infrastructure are limited.
