🌍 Reflections on COP29 in Baku Nearly 200 countries and thousands of participants gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan, for #COP29, where critical decisions on the future of our planet were on the table. The agenda? Reducing emissions, increasing national climate ambitions, implementing UN carbon market rules, transitioning away from fossil fuels, and setting a crucial new goal for climate finance – the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) – aimed at providing greater support to developing countries in tackling and preparing for climate change. Yet, while progress was made, COP29 is being viewed as a step back in ambition. The lack of consensus on phasing out fossil fuels and concerns about the adequacy of the NCQG underscore the challenges we face. There’s a silver lining. The growing presence of private sector participants brings hope, as institutions increasingly step up to address the financing gap. This collaboration could be a game-changer, signaling a shift in how we tackle climate challenges together. The road ahead demands greater ambition, collaboration, and innovation. What are your thoughts on the outcomes of COP29? Are we moving fast enough? This week, G20 leaders gathered in Rio de Janeiro under the motto of 'Building a just world and a sustainable planet'. We are thrilled to see their commitment to this vision reaffirmed, including a pledge to accelerate access to clean cooking in their Leaders' Declaration – a vital step towards just and inclusive energy transitions! Leading up to the meetings in November, as part of the Brazilian G20 Clean Cooking Working Group, SEforAll, the International Energy Agency and the World Bank’s ESMAP, contributed to a strategic roadmap highlighting key milestones for achieving universal access to clean cooking. This roadmap focuses on four pillars: 1. Strengthening policy and regulatory frameworks 2. Unlocking financing and innovative funding models 3. Fostering market competition and supply chain development 4. Driving impact assessments and data-driven decisions This roadmap lays a strong foundation to carry the momentum forward into COP30. As a key milestone along the way, we aim to also spotlight clean cooking on the global stage at the Global SEforALL Forum in March, hosted in Barbados. Together, let’s bring clean cooking to the forefront and drive progress toward achieving SDG7! Did you know that close to 1 billion people in low- & lower-middle-income countries are served by healthcare facilities without reliable electricity access or with no electricity access at all? The world needs at least USD 5 billion to close the energy gap in the health sector across the Global South. If we don’t invest in powering health facilities, the energy gap will only get bigger and healthcare in the Global South will be compromised further. At #COP29, I joined Dr. Maria Neira the Director of Environment, Climate Change and Health at the World Health Organization; ‘Lamide Niyi-Afuye, CEO of the Africa Minigrid Developers Association (AMDA), Dr. Tamer Rabie of the Climate and Health Program at The World Bank; Muna Albanna, the Regional Infrastructure Lead for the Middle East at the UNOPS; and others, where we shared important insights on the roles and responsibilities of multi-sectoral partnerships in addressing these financial gaps.
