This historic document laid the groundwork for cooperation, solidarity, and lasting peace on our continent, shaping the future of Europe. After the devastation of World War II, a vision emerged among European politicians for a united Europe to prevent future conflicts. The Schuman Declaration, spearheaded by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, outlined a bold vision of pooling strategic resources, notably coal and steel, to foster unity and deter war between nations. In 1951, the Treaty establishing the European Coal and Steel Community was signed by six nations, laying the foundations for European integration. This momentous step paved the way for today's European Union, evolving from an economic community to a political union committed to democracy, diversity, and unity. Schuman famously stated, "Europe will not be made all at once, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity." As we commemorate Europe Day in 2024, we reflect on the remarkable journey from post-war devastation to a union of peace and prosperity.
